Yankees’ pitcher Waite Hoyt got himself into trouble early after a lead off strikeout to begin the game. The next eight of the batters in the lineup all reached base safely until a fielder’s choice and another strikeout to Mickey Cochrane ended the onslaught, but not before the Athletics had scored 5 runs. Hoyt settled down and remained in the game through the first five innings, but the damage had already been done. The Yankees scored a pair in the 3rd and another in the 7th before Philadelphia added their 6th run in the 8th to put the game out of reach. Lefty Grove proved his solid credentials holding the “Murderer’s Row” Yankees to just 3 runs on 8 hits throughout the affair and on his way to being named the game’s best player. He also did well at the plate going 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the first. The Athletics win game 1 with 6 runs on 11 hits. The Yankees fall with 3 runs on 8 hits. No errors were committed by either team throughout the game’s play.
