1991PS-1991 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1991 Chicago Cubs

Zane Smith

  • Pittsburgh Pirates 7 (5-1)
  • Chicago Cubs 3 (1-5)

In the final game of the series, Chicago came out early, but wasn’t able to sustain it and were swept in 3 games. Ryne Sandberg gave the Cubs a 1st inning lead with a 2 run blast to start the festivities. In the 4th however, the Pirates came alive and singles by Van Slyke, Bonds, and King along with a double by LaValliere put Pittsburgh back on top with a 3-2 score. A pair of back to back trips from Gary Redus and Jay Bell to lead off the 5th tacked on another insurance run for the Bucs before back to back homers in the 7th by Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla all but assured victory despite the Cubs snagging a solo home run from Luis Salazar in the 8th who came into the game for an injured Mark Grace. There were plenty of heroes in the game offensively, but Pittsburgh starter Zane Smith gets the game ball with a win on 8.1 innings pitched with 3 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. Pittsburgh completes their first road trip and first series sweep with 7 runs on 12 hits without an error. The Cubbies fall with 3 runs on 7 hits and an error.

  • Pittsburgh Pirates 9 (4-1)
  • Chicago Cubs 3 (1-4)

Chicago made it interesting when Andre Dawson crushed a 2-0 fastball in the 3rd for a tying 3 run homer, but for the rest of the game the Cubs could muster no more. ST-1997 Florida Marlins at 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks

Randy Johnson

  • 1997 Florida Marlins 0
  • 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks 2

A Spring Training absolute pitching masterpiece by both teams as both combined for no earned runs, complete games pitched, and 24 strikeouts between them. The D-backs grabbed their first run thanks to an error by Bobby Bonilla in the bottom of the second that put Matt Williams on base. He was driven home two batters later by an Andy Fox single to left. In the 7th another error on Bonilla allowed Tony Womack to score giving Arizona a 2 run lead. Florida had a pair of chances to get back into the game when Gary Sheffield had runners on first and third in the 7th inning only to ground out to short, and a one out triple from Moises Alou in the top of the 9th was followed by two strikeouts to end the affair. Both pitchers were superb, but Randy Johnson gets the game ball throwing 13 strikeouts while only allowing 2 walks and no earned runs. Florida drops a heartbreaking pitcher duel with no runs on 4 hits and 3 errors that ultimately cost them the game. Arizona takes the victory with 2 runs on 4 hits and no errors.

1991PS-1991 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1991 Chicago Cubs

John Wehner

  • Pittsburgh Pirates 2 (3-1)
  • Chicago Cubs 1 (1-3)

In their first game of on the season on the road, the Pirates very nearly ended the game in defeat, but some timely pinch hitting in the final frame gave them a hard fought victory. Both pitchers threw great games as neither team was able to score a single run in the first six frames before the Cubbies got on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning with a leadoff home run from Andre Dawson. The game remained with Chicago up by a single solitary run until the bottom of the 9th when Pittsburgh went to their bench. After a lead off strikeout from Barry Bonds, Jeff King reached when Cubs shortstop Shawn Dunston bobbled an easily fielded ball. Don Slaught came into pinch hit for catcher Mike LaValliere and drove King to 3rd with a single to left. Next pinch hitter Lloyd McClendon drove King home with a double. John Wehner then came in to pinch hit and, with a single to right, brought Don Slaught home across the plate to score the winning run. For his game winning single, John Wehner gets the game ball. Pittsburgh wins with 2 runs on 9 hits with no errors. The Cubs lose with a difficult error and 1 run on 8 hits.

1991PS-1991 Montreal Expos at 1991 Pittsburgh Pirates

Bobby Bonilla

  • Montreal Expos 3 (1-2)
  • Pittsburgh Pirates 7 (2-1)

The Pirates did not trail throughout the entire game and took their first series of the season two games to one. The Expos managed only a single decent inning where they scored on an Ivan Calderon 3 run shot in the 6th while Pittsburgh started things off with a pair of homers in the first, a 2 runner from Jay Bell and a solo shot from Bonilla. Bobby Bo gave the Buccos another run from a single in 4th to score Orlando Merced and hit another bomb in the 6th scoring Andy Van Slyke after his tripled Bell to the plate. For the Pirates, John Smiley was stellar tossing a complete game in his first start of the year and only allowing four hits, but Bobby Bonilla is the player of the game with 3 hits on 4 at bats including a pair of homers with 4 RBI’s and scoring 2 himself. The Expos drop the last game of the series with 3 runs on 4 hits and no errors. Pittsburgh gathered 7 runs on 13 hits without an error.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics Game 7

Jesse Barnes

  • 1921 New York Giants 4
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics 2

Throughout the entire Roaring Twenties Ultimate Playoff the 1921 New York Giants were the underdog, but with Game 7 of the Championship in the books they stand atop as the greatest team of the 1920’s. New York roared out to a quick 2 run lead with a pair of doubles in the first scoring a run, and a single and an error on the A’s in the second. In the bottom of the third the Athletics proved they weren’t ready to give up just yet as Mule Haas and Mickey Cochrane both scored on a single to right by Al Simmons. Tasting the championship within their grasp though, the Giants scrambled 2 runs in the 6th with singles from Meusel, Snyder, and Youngs. On his way to player of the game honors and series MVP, Giants hurler Jesse Barnes shut Philly down with a final perfect 4 innings to end the contest. The New York Giants take the series and the Roaring Twenties Ultimate Championship with 4 runs on 11 hits without and error while the A’s go home defeated on 2 runs with only 5 hits on 1 error.

  • 1921 New York Giants 2
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics 9

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1921 New York Giants Game 5

Art Nehf

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-3
  • 1921 New York Giants-10

The Giants started early placing three runs on the board in the bottom of the 1st and never relinquished the lead throughout the next eight innings. A three run bomb from Irish Meusel in the bottom of the 1st set the stage as New York piled on two more runs in the 3rd and a five run 4th with runs scored by Frisch, Rawlings, Kelly, Youngs and Nehf gave the Giants all the runs they would need to secure a victory in game five. Art Nehf, on his way to the game ball, pitched a complete game surrendering solitary runs to the A’s in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th while maintaining tight control over the ball all day despite his team have fielding troubles. Philadelphia drops down 2 games to 3 with 3 runs on 8 hits with no errors while New York takes themselves one step closer to the championship with 10 runs on 11 hits with an abysmal 5 errors.

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1921 New York Giants Game 4

Mule Haas

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-10
  • 1921 New York Giants-7

The big bats came alive in Game 4 of the Roaring Twenties Championship Series as both teams combined for a total of 31 hits and 17 runs. Both teams snatched a single run, Philly in the 1st and New York in the 2nd, but in the top of the 3rd, the Athletics took it upon themselves to up the ante. Batting around the A’s plated 5 with a 3 run homer by Jmmie Foxx and a pair of triples from Boley and Haas offerring a helping hand. The Giants could only manage a single run in the bottom of the frame while Philadelphia added two more runs in the 4th and the 6th. New York battled back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the 7th and another in the 8th, but with Phily snatching up two more in the top of the 8th, the challenge was just too great for the Giants. Mule Haas was the key to the A’s victory going 4 for 6 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a pair of runs as Philadelphia scored 10 runs on 17 hits with no errors. The Giants fall with 7 runs on 14 hits and a single error.

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1921 New York Giants Game 3

Earl Smith

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-1
  • 1921 New York Giants-2

After 2 straight blow out affairs in games 1 and 2, game 3 saw solid pitching from both clubs take the game to the bottom of the 9th and ended it in beautiful walk off fashion. New York took the early lead with an RBI double to center from shortstop Dave Bancroft. In the 5th the A’s tied things up with a Mickey Cochrane double after Philly pitcher Rube Walberg reached on an error by Johnny Rawlings, his 3rd in as many games (he would add another in the 8th). The score remained tied at 1 a piece until the bottom of the 9th when George Burns rocketed a triple into centerfield. The Giants replaced starting pitcher Jesse Barnes with pinch hitter Earl Smith who dribbled a single into left field scoring Burns and walking off the game. For his clinch game winning single Earl Smith snatches the game ball. The A’s fall in game 3 and go down 2 games to 1 with 1 run on 10 hits and no errors. The 1921 Giants take the game and the series lead with 2 runs on 9 hits and 2 errors.
