The Murderer’s Row New York Yankee offense finally came alive in a big way. Unfortunately, the Athletic offense gave just a little bit more and snatched the win. The Yankee’s drew first blood in the 3rd with a solo homer by Pat Collins to lead off the inning and 4 walks had Mark Koenig trot home for a 2-0 New York advantage. They made it 3-0 in the top of the 4th thanks to a Lou Gehrig single to left that scored Earle Combs. In the bottom of the inning however is when the A’s came alive. Philly batted around and snagged 5 runs courtesy of an error on Koenig, 2 walks, and hits by Mule Haas, Bing Miller, Sammy Hale, and a pinch hit 2 RBI single by Jimmy Dykes. The Yanks added another run in the top of the 5th, but Philadelphia left off where they ended their previous time at the plate scoring an additional 4 runs for a 9-4 commanding lead. The Babe crushed his first homer of the series with a 3-run shot in the 8th, but the Yankees could mount no more. New York scored 7 runs on 11 hits with 2 errors on Koenig and 1 on Tony Lazzeri. Philadelphia scored 9 runs on 11 hits without an error. A’s centerfielder Mule Haas takes the player of the game honor reaching base 4 times including the winning 2 RBI double to right in the 5th inning.

The Pirates got on the board early when 3 singles to begin the game scored Max Carey on a Kiki Cuyler single, but when Eddie Moore got greedy 2 batters later and tried to score from 3rd on a fly out to center, George Burns gunned him out to stop the Bucco rally. In the bottom of the 1st, New York tied it up on a High Pockets Kelly single to center, but Pittsburgh went up again in the top of the 2nd on a double play ground out that scored George Grantham. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Pirates until the bottom of the 8th inning. While Emil Yde threw a bend but don’t break solid 6 innings, he finally broke on a 2 RBI Irish Meusel single to left that gave the Giants the lead and the game. Irish Meusel’s key base hit earns him the game ball. He went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s a double and a run scored in the 1st. The Pirates lose with 2 runs on 7 hits. New York wins with 3 runs on 11 hits. Both teams were responsible for no errors.

Trying to go swing for swing with the 1969 Orioles is never a good idea. Unfortunately, the 1976 Phillies had to learn that lesson the hard way. A 3 run crushing shot to center by Mike Schmidt started Philadelphia with a decent lead in the top of the 1st, but in the bottom half of the inning, Boog Powell matched Schmidt’s 3 run bomb with one of his own, and that was followed up with a Dave Johnson RBI single to right. The Phils knotted it at 4 with a solo homer by Greg Luzinski in the 3rd, but the bottom of the inning put the game out of reach for the bicentennial boys of Philadelphia. Frank Robinson scored on a Chico Salmon single before the other Robinson, Brooks, crushed a bases loaded grand slam. Don Buford scored shortly thereafter for a 6 run inning and a 10-4 lead for the birds. Another homer by Brooks gave the Orioles 11 on the day, and a solo shot by Dick Allen reduced the damage for the Phillies. Despite hitting 3 home runs, Philly loses with 5 runs on 6 hits and 1 error. Also with 3 homers, Baltimore wins with 11 runs on 14 hits and no errors. If it is not obvious, it should be. Brooks Robinson went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and a solo homer to capture the game ball.

The New York Mets get handed their first loss of the season. New York was shocked in the 3rd inning when Indians’ pitcher Mike Garcia knocked a homer to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead, but a Lenny Dykstra steal in the 4th saw him tie up the game on a Gary Carter single to center. In the next frame Cleveland once again took the lead after on error on Ray Knight had Al Smith score on a George Strickland triple the very next at bat. Neither team was able to plate another runner, and the Indians won the affair 2-1. Because of his home run in the 3rd inning and going 6 strong innings pitched with 7 hits, 1 run, and 5 strikeouts, Mike Garcia is named player of the game. The Tribe win with 2 runs on 9 hits without an error while the Mets lose with 1 run on 7 hits and 1 costly game losing error.

A’s pitcher Rube Walberg scored the only run for Philly in the bottom of the 6th on a Bing Miller RBI single to right, and in the top of the 7th Bob Meusel sent Mark Koenig home on a 2 out single to left. Herb Pennock takes the player of the game honors with a complete game pitched that saw only 4 hits, no earned runs, and 3 strikeouts. New York wins with 3 runs on 8 hits. April 8th, 1991: Opening day of my 1991 Pirates season replay sees the Expos travel to Three Rivers Stadium. Both teams ace’s, 1990 Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek for Pittsburgh and Dennis Martinez for Montreal faced off in what started off as a quite expected affair. Both hurlers tossed a 1 run 8 hit game between them throughout the first 4 innings until just before the start of the 5th when the Pennsylvania skies opened up and began dropping puddles throughout western PA. The game was suspended until Tuesday the 9th, and when both teams returned to a drier field, Bob Walk and Mark Gardner had taken over on the mound. The pitching change looked to favor Montreal as runs by Ivan Calderon and Larry Walker gave the Expos a 2-1 advantage, and after a Bobby Bonilla solo shot tied it up in the bottom of the 6th, doubles by Delino DeShields and Tim Wallach gave the Canadians another 1 run advantage. That advantage held until the bottom of the 8th when Montreal pitching woes and quality hitting for the Buccos took over. Pittsburgh accumulated 8 runs on 4 walks, 2 doubles, a single, and a grand slammer by shortstop Jay Bell gave Pittsburgh their first win of the year. Montreal scored 3 runs on 10 hits without an error. The opening day game ball goes to Bobby Bonilla who garnered 2 hits on 4 at bats with a double and a homer as well as 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s to help Pittsburgh win with 10 runs on 10 hits and no errors.

Minnesota led the game 2-0 after a Rich Rollins RBI single in the 2nd and a Rollins RBI on a fielder’s choice to short in the 4th. For Cleveland, Dave Philley doubled to begin the 6th, and he went home on a 2 out Dave Pope single. Al Rosen drove in Bobby Avila on the following at bat, and right afterwards, Larry Doby hit an outta the park 3 run zinger to make it 5 for the inning. The Indians added another in the bottom of the 7th and Minnesota added their 3rd and final run of the day on a Harmon Killebrew solo blast in the top of the 8th. Larry Doby only went 1 for 4, but with his 3 RBI homer he gets the game ball. The Twins scored 3 runs on 8 hits with 1 error while the Tribe grab 6 runs on 9 hits without an error.

Detroit grabbed their only run of the game in the bottom of the second on an error by Solly Hoffman, and it was not until the top of the 6th that Chicago tied it up with a Johnny Kling single to left that scored Jimmy Sheckard. The Cubs grabbed the victory in the top of the final frame when a walk, a hit batsman, 2 singles, and a double saw 3 runs score. Chicago wins on the road with 4 runs on 8 hits and 3 errors. Detroit, at home, loses with 1 run on 5 hits and 1 error. Mordecai grabs the game ball with “Three Fingers.”

When a team nearly doubles the amount of hits of the opposition and dances with the long ball 4 times it is usually a surefire bet that they will take the victory, but with clutch hitting on the Pirates part and defensive mistakes on the Yankees part, Pittsburgh squeaked out a 1 run victory. Three solo shots by Bob Cerv, Roger Maris, and Bill Skowron in the 4th inning and another by Cerv in the 6th put the Yankees up 4-0 before the bottom of the inning. With doubles by Dots Miller, Tommy Leach, and Bobby Byrne the Pirates cut New York’s lead to 1 run, and in the bottom of the 9th a pinch hit double by Alan Storke scored Tommy Leach and Bobby Byrne to walk off the game. New York suffers a humiliating defeat with 4 runs on 13 hits and 3 errors while Pittsburgh pulled out the shocking win with 5 runs on 7 hits and 1 error. Tommy Leach earn player of the game distinction going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.
