RTUP-1927 New York Yankees at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics

Lefty Grove

  • 1927 New York Yankees-1
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-3

The 1927 Murderer’s Row Yankees have often been hailed as the Greatest Team of All Time. The 1929 Athletics have something to say about that as they take game 5 and the series. It was a pitcher’s duel as Lefty Grove and Waite Hoyt battled it out for supremacy, but in the end the A’s Grove took the win and the game surrendering 1 run on 6 hits and earning player of the game distinction. Both hurlers tossed a pair of scoreless six and a half innings before Philadelphia grabbed 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th thanks to 3 singles, a walk, and a double from Foxx, Hale, Bishop, Grove, and Cochrane. New York snagged 3 back to back to back singles in the 9th for their single run, but Philly took the victory on their pitching with 3 runs on 6 hits with 1 errors while the Yankees lose the game and the series on 1 run with 6 hits and 2 errors.

RTUP-1927 New York Yankees at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics

Mule Haas

  • 1927 New York Yankees-7
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-9

The Murderer’s Row New York Yankee offense finally came alive in a big way. Unfortunately, the Athletic offense gave just a little bit more and snatched the win. The Yankee’s drew first blood in the 3rd with a solo homer by Pat Collins to lead off the inning and 4 walks had Mark Koenig trot home for a 2-0 New York advantage. They made it 3-0 in the top of the 4th thanks to a Lou Gehrig single to left that scored Earle Combs. In the bottom of the inning however is when the A’s came alive. Philly batted around and snagged 5 runs courtesy of an error on Koenig, 2 walks, and hits by Mule Haas, Bing Miller, Sammy Hale, and a pinch hit 2 RBI single by Jimmy Dykes. The Yanks added another run in the top of the 5th, but Philadelphia left off where they ended their previous time at the plate scoring an additional 4 runs for a 9-4 commanding lead. The Babe crushed his first homer of the series with a 3-run shot in the 8th, but the Yankees could mount no more. New York scored 7 runs on 11 hits with 2 errors on Koenig and 1 on Tony Lazzeri. Philadelphia scored 9 runs on 11 hits without an error. A’s centerfielder Mule Haas takes the player of the game honor reaching base 4 times including the winning 2 RBI double to right in the 5th inning.

RTUP-1927 New York Yankees at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics

Herb Pennock

  • 1927 New York Yankees-3
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-1

The Bombers may not have improved their offense over games 1 & 2, but their pitching came through in game 3 to shut down the Athletics and hand the Yankees their first win of the series. Yanks pitcher Herb Pennock helped his cause early with an RBI single in the 2nd, and in the top of the 6th a passed ball on Mickey Cochrane helped Babe Ruth to make the game 2-0. A’s pitcher Rube Walberg scored the only run for Philly in the bottom of the 6th on a Bing Miller RBI single to right, and in the top of the 7th Bob Meusel sent Mark Koenig home on a 2 out single to left. Herb Pennock takes the player of the game honors with a complete game pitched that saw only 4 hits, no earned runs, and 3 strikeouts. New York wins with 3 runs on 8 hits. Philadelphia loses with 1 run on 4 hits. Both teams committed 1 error a piece.

GTS-1961 New York Yankees at 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates

Tommy Leach

  • 1961 New York Yankees-4
  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

When a team nearly doubles the amount of hits of the opposition and dances with the long ball 4 times it is usually a surefire bet that they will take the victory, but with clutch hitting on the Pirates part and defensive mistakes on the Yankees part, Pittsburgh squeaked out a 1 run victory. Three solo shots by Bob Cerv, Roger Maris, and Bill Skowron in the 4th inning and another by Cerv in the 6th put the Yankees up 4-0 before the bottom of the inning. With doubles by Dots Miller, Tommy Leach, and Bobby Byrne the Pirates cut New York’s lead to 1 run, and in the bottom of the 9th a pinch hit double by Alan Storke scored Tommy Leach and Bobby Byrne to walk off the game. New York suffers a humiliating defeat with 4 runs on 13 hits and 3 errors while Pittsburgh pulled out the shocking win with 5 runs on 7 hits and 1 error. Tommy Leach earn player of the game distinction going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.

GTS-1961 New York Yankees at 1976 Philadelphia Phillies

Bob Cerv

  • 1961 New York Yankees-8
  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-7

The big bats came out in this extra innings affair between 2 offensive powerhouses. The Yanks looked on their way to a rout in the top of the 1st and 2nd innings as they jumped out quickly to a 6-0 lead. In the 1st, homers by Bob Cerv and Elston Howard scored 5 runs, and in the following frame pitcher Bud Daley was sent home by Tony Kubek after the pitch tosser led off the inning with a double. In the bottom of the 2nd however, the Phils proved it was still early, and thanks in part to a Bob Boone double Philadelphia made the score 6-4. After the 3rd, New York still led by 2, 7-5, after a triple by Boyer in the top of the inning and an error on Kubek in the bottom half. In the 8th, the Phillies tied it up with 2 runs scored by Mike Schmidt and Jay Johnstone, and both teams remained knotted at 7 at the end of regulation. Roger Maris scored Mickey Mantle for the winning run in the top of the 10th when Philadelphia could not get on base in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees win in extras, 8 runs on 16 hits with no errors. Philadelphia loses with 7 runs on 9 hits with 1 error. Bob Cerv’s 3 RBI’s and 2 for 5 showing with a home run helped him to get the game ball.

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1927 New York Yankees

Jimmie Foxx

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-3
  • 1927 New York Yankees-2

It was a solid pitchers duel in the big apple between 2 offensive juggernauts with some 9th inning magic that made all of the difference. In the first 7 innings only the Yankees were able to get on the board with a run. Earle Combs, after a leadoff triple, made his way home on a Lou Gehrig single. The score remained 1-0 until the Athletics tied it up in the top of the 8th. A 2 out single from Mule Haas tied up the game after he drove Max Bishop home. Philadelphia finally took the lead after Jimmie Foxx hit a 3-0 fastball out of the park with Al Simmons standing on 1st base. The Yankees, in the bottom of the inning and with plenty of batters reaching, could only manage to cut into the A’s victory by 1 run ending the game down 3-2. Jimmie Foxx gets the game ball going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s on the game winning home run. The Athletics win with 3 runs on 7 hits and no errors. The Yankees lose with 2 runs on 7 hits and no errors as well.

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1927 New York Yankees

Lefty Grove

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics: 6
  • 1927 New York Yankees: 3

Yankees’ pitcher Waite Hoyt got himself into trouble early after a lead off strikeout to begin the game. The next eight of the batters in the lineup all reached base safely until a fielder’s choice and another strikeout to Mickey Cochrane ended the onslaught, but not before the Athletics had scored 5 runs. Hoyt settled down and remained in the game through the first five innings, but the damage had already been done. The Yankees scored a pair in the 3rd and another in the 7th before Philadelphia added their 6th run in the 8th to put the game out of reach. Lefty Grove proved his solid credentials holding the “Murderer’s Row” Yankees to just 3 runs on 8 hits throughout the affair and on his way to being named the game’s best player. He also did well at the plate going 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the first. The Athletics win game 1 with 6 runs on 11 hits. The Yankees fall with 3 runs on 8 hits. No errors were committed by either team throughout the game’s play.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 1961 New York Yankees

Mickey Mantle

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-3
  • 1961 New York Yankees-4

Both pitchers, Jack Billingham for the Reds and White Ford for the Yankees, tossed good games, but in the end 1 run decided the whole affair. New York looked on their way to an easy victory after a Mickey Mantle 3 run homer to center in the 3rd inning and another run in the 4th gave the Yanks a 4-0 lead. Undeterred however were the Reds, who battled back with a Pete Rose solo home run in the 6th and two runs in the 7th thanks to a Mickey Mantle error. Unfortunately they just did not have enough time left in the game to tie it up and left New York City on the losing end of a 1 run game. The 1975 Reds scored 3 runs on 5 hits with no errors. The 1961 Yankees scored 4 on 7 hits with 2 errors. With his 3 run home run and another single in the 8th, Mickey Mantle takes the honor as player of the game.

1961 New York Yankees

yankees generic

The 1961 New York Yankees take the field at the Great Teams Season with an 8 game lead on the Detroit Tigers and a record of 109-53. Most famous for the chase to break Babe Ruth’s home run record of 60 in a single season, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle led the Yankees, who led the league in home runs, hitting 61 and 54 respectively, with the former breaking the record.  The team also dominated in the World Series defeating the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1 and are often granted the unofficial title of the Greatest Baseball Team in History and they are looking to make that title official in the Great Teams Season.

GTS-1969 Baltimore Orioles at 1961 New York Yankees

Bill Stafford

  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-1
  • 1961 New York Yankees-3

In the battle of the big bats, it was anything but as both heavy hitting teams combined for only 4 runs and 11 hits. Both teams struggled throughout the first five frames until a Brooks Robinson double scored the Orioles only run of the game in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning Robinson accounted for an error that led to the Yanks scoring Kubek, Mantle, and Maris for 3 runs and eventually the game. Yankees pitcher Stafford had another solid start and is named player of the game giving up 1 run on 4 hits in a nearly complete game pitched. The Orioles also tallied 2 errors in the contest. New York plated 3 on 7 hits without an error and switch places in the standing with the Orioles as they capture the number two spot.
