GTS-1976 Philadelphia Phillies at 1984 Detroit Tigers

Tom Underwood

  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-3
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-2

Both teams started out slow. The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the 5th inning when a bases loaded situation saw a run score because of a Mike Schmidt error. In the top of the 6th the Phillies came back however thanks to an error on Howard Johnson that started a run that saw the Phillies plate Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, and Jay Johnstone for a 3-1 lead. The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the 7th when an error on Dick Allen scored Larry Herndon. Tom Underwood’s day was finished after he closed out that inning and he earns player of the game honor after throwing 7 innings with 2 unearned runs, 5 hits, 6 strikeouts, and 5 walks. Wayne Twitchell earned the save in the 9th to give the Phillies the win with 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 errors. The Tigers drop another one with 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 error.

GTS-1984 Detroit Tigers 5 Round Recap

tigers generic

With the exception of one game, the 1984 Detroit Tigers have won or lost all of their games by the slimmest of margins, 1 run. With a 5-4 win over the Yankess and a 9-8 defeat of the 1946 Red Sox, the Tigers have done exactly what was necessary to earn the W, but with a 4-3 loss in Baltimore, and a 3-2 defeat at home against the bicentennial Phillies, Detroit has come up just short of the win.  The outlier here would be their round 4 stunning defeat at the hands of the 1906 Cubs, 4-1, that has placed them into a lowly position of 12th place.  Lance Parrish, Dave Bergman, and Chet Lemon are all batting .300 or over, but the team has, as a whole, found it difficult to do everything necessary to make winning consistent.  Only the future knows if they can make a consistent habit of winning games as they have a tough schedule in their next 3 games against the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates, the 4 and 1 1942 Cardinals, and the ’01 Mariners.

GTS-1984 Detroit Tigers at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-3
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-4

With both teams heading into their second game of the season at 1 and 0, the Tigers and Orioles each gave a superb single inning of offensive prowess. In the top of the 1st, the Tigers took an early lead with 3 runs on 5 consecutive hits including a double by Chet Lemon. On the other hand, the Orioles got on the board in the 6th, scoring 4 runs on back to back bombs: a 3 run shot by Boog Powell and a solo knock from Chico Salmon. Neither team was able to score outside of the 1st and 6th innings, and the 1969 Baltimore Orioles came out with a 4 to 3 win. Despite only being able to get one hit, it was a big one and Boog Powell gets player of the game honors, his second in two games played thus far in the season. The 1984 Tigers got their 3 runs on 8 hits with 1 error defensively. The Orioles got their 4 runs on 8 hits with 1 error as well.

Notes: Played at Red Canyon on 16 Apr 2014.

GTS-1961 New York Yankees at 1984 Detroit Tigers

Lance Parrish

  • 1961 New York Yankees-4
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-5

The Bronx Bombers took a quick 3 to nothing lead in the top of the 2nd from a Bill Skowron homer, but the Tigers battled back with single runs in the 3rd and 4th before taking the lead on a 2 run homer by Lance Parrish in the bottom of the 6th.  The Yankees, not willing to be out done, tied it in the top of the following inning before dropping the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning.  The Tigers begin their season victorious with 5 runs on 8 hits and an error.  The 1961 Yankees, playoff favorites to begin the season, drop their first game with 4 runs on 10 hits and 1 error.  Lance Parrish takes player of the game honor going 3 for 4 with a run scored, a home run and driving in 4 of the Tigers 5 runs.
