1919 World Series Replay Game 2

Dutch Reuther

  • 1919 Chicago White Sox-1
  • 1919 Cincinnati Reds-2

Both teams pitched solidly for the first half of the game, with only the White Sox giving up a hit in the 4th and 5th, but in the 6th the Reds snagged 2 runs from a Jake Daubert single to lead off, a two out triple from Greasy Neale, and a base hit from Larry Kopf. In the 7th, Chicago got their only hits and a single run from Nemo Liebold to make the game 2-1. Both teams went hitless for the remainder of the affair and the Red Stockings tied up the series at one game a piece with a one run win. For his pitching performance, the Reds Dutch Reuther gets the game ball with 9 innings pitched, 3 hits given up, 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts. The White Sox drop game 2 with 1 run on 3 hits. The Reds win with 2 runs on 5 hits. Neither team surrendered an error.

1919 World Series Replay Game 1

Eddie Cicotte

  • Chicago White Sox-1
  • Cincinnati Reds-0

Both pitchers tossed solid 9 hit complete games, but it was the Chicago White Sox who came out victorious when a 1 out Bucky Weaver double gave Joe Jackson the opportunity to drive in the game’s only run the following plate appearance with a base hit to left. Despite suspicions arising thanks to 4 errors on the White Sox, Eddie Cicotte pitched superbly despite committing 2 of the errors himself. He earns the game ball throwing 9 innings with 9 hits, no runs scored, and 3 strikeouts. Had Cincinnati managed more than singles they may have gotten the opportunity to score a run and send the game into extra innings, but despite the hits and Chicago’s willingness to make mistakes they could not get a runner to the plate. Chicago wins game 1 with 1 run on 9 hits and 4 errors. The Redlegs scored no runs on 9 hits with 1 error.

GTS-1962 Los Angeles Dodgers at 1975 Cincinnati Reds

don gullett

  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-2
  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-6

Don Gullett gets the game ball with a complete game, 1 earned run , 6 hit performance, and 5 strikeouts on the Reds way to a 6-2 victory. In the 2nd inning the Reds drove in 5 runs with hits from Cesar Geronimo, Pete Rose, George Foster, Tony Perez, and the pitcher. The Dodgers finally got on the board with a run in the 6th, and an error on Pete Rose helped Tommy Davis score in the 7th. Leading 5-2 and with Don Gullett pitching a solid game, the Reds added another run in the bottom of the 8th for extra measure, but Los Angeles’ offense never kicked into high gear and they lose with 2 runs on 6 hits without any errors. Cincinnati takes the contest with 6 runs on 13 hits and 1 error.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Brett Boone

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-5
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-6

The longest game yet of the season sees the Mariners walk off the Reds in 13 innings. Seattle grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and was up 3-1 after the 3rd, but 4 unanswered runs by Cincinnati had the Reds up 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th. A lead off pinch hit single by Stan Javier was followed up by hits from Ichiro Suzuki, Mark McLemore, and John Olerud tying the game at 5 runs a piece. It was not until the bottom of the 13th inning that the contest was decided after a Dan Wilson double led off the inning and a 2 out RBI single from Edgar Martinez ended the affair. Player of the game Bret Boone had a day of 3’s with 3 hits, all doubles, and 3 RBI’s. The Reds lost a heartbreaker with 5 runs on 10 hits with no errors. The Mariners walk off with 6 runs on 12 hits and 1 error.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 1961 New York Yankees

Mickey Mantle

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-3
  • 1961 New York Yankees-4

Both pitchers, Jack Billingham for the Reds and White Ford for the Yankees, tossed good games, but in the end 1 run decided the whole affair. New York looked on their way to an easy victory after a Mickey Mantle 3 run homer to center in the 3rd inning and another run in the 4th gave the Yanks a 4-0 lead. Undeterred however were the Reds, who battled back with a Pete Rose solo home run in the 6th and two runs in the 7th thanks to a Mickey Mantle error. Unfortunately they just did not have enough time left in the game to tie it up and left New York City on the losing end of a 1 run game. The 1975 Reds scored 3 runs on 5 hits with no errors. The 1961 Yankees scored 4 on 7 hits with 2 errors. With his 3 run home run and another single in the 8th, Mickey Mantle takes the honor as player of the game.

1975 Cincinnati Reds

Anyone who does not understand why the 1975 Cincinnati Reds are in the Great Teams Season needs to have their baseball fan cards taken away. 108 wins, playoff victories over the Pirates and the Red Sox, 64-17 home record, 840 runs scored, and a +254 run differential should tell you enough about the “Big Red Machine” to understand their credentials.  1975 MVP Joe Morgan and “Charlie Hustle” himself, Pete Rose, lead the 1975 Reds into a Great Teams Seasons where they already know they are the best of all time and now they’re here to prove it.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 1942 St. Louis Cardinals

Enos Slaughter

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-3
  • 1942 St. Louis Cardinals-4

While both teams garnered the same number of hits, it was the Cardinals who were able to make them count just a little bit more. Three runs by the Reds in the third saw Cincinnati take the lead, but St. Louis piled up a 4 run 5th that saw them go ahead. Both teams provided nothing throughout the rest of the day, and the Cards took the win. The Reds scored 3 runs on 8 hits without an error, but the Cardinals scored 4 runs on 8 hits and a single error to take the game. Enos Slaughter gets the game ball going 2 for 3 with the game winning RBI.

GTS-1972 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1975 Cincinnati Reds

Bob Moose

  • 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates-13
  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-1

In what was expected to be one of the most exciting matchups in interleague play, the 1975 Reds took on their 1970’s playoff rival Pirates. Defeating them in both the 1972 and 1975 NLCS, the Reds expected a hard fought game, but with a victorious outcome.  Sadly, they were mistaken as the 1972 Pirates routed the Big Red Machine, 13-1.  With the exception of the pitcher, every Pirate scored a run during the game thanks to a 3 run 4th, a 2 run 9th, and a devastating 8 run 7th for which Cincinnati could not answer.  Three Pirates hitters tallied 3 hits apiece, Richie Hebner led the team with 4 RBI’s and Roberto Clemente scored 3 runs himself.  The only standout for the Reds was first baseman Tony Perez who went 4 for 4 with a double.  With all of the offense on display from the Bucs it was difficult to pick a single standout player, but Pirates pitcher Bob Moose earns the honor pitching a complete game while surrendering 1 run on 6 hits and accounting for 12 strikeouts.  The Reds drop to ??? place with a  record of 2 and 4 after putting up 1 run, 6 hits, no errors, and suffering an embarrassing loss.  The 1972 Pirates scored 13 runs on 15 hits without an error.  The 1975 Reds try to get back into the season as they take on the 1-5 Twins in Round 6.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds 5 Round Recap

reds generic

Current standings place the 1975 Reds in 9th place after 5 games and I could have scarcely imagined when I began this season that the “Big Red Machine” would have struggled this much.  After a 2-1 win at San Francisco to the 1962 Giants on opening day, the Reds dropped their next 2 games, a 1 run 4-3 loss to the Cardinals and another 4-3 loss at home to the ’61 Yankees.  After defeating the ’62 Dodgers 6-2 in round 4, the Reds go undefeated against both 1962 teams, but in round 5 they suffered another 1 run heartbreaker to the 2001 Seattle Mariners, 6-5.  While the Reds have struggled offensively, it has been pitching that has let them down the most.  Their only solace has come from Don Gullett who has been the starting pitcher in both of their wins.  When he starts they win, but Cincinnati needs to find another starter who can lead them to victory as they face off against the 1972 Pirates, the 1965 Twins, and the 1986 Mets in their next 3 contests.

GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 1962 San Francisco Giants

don gullett

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-2
  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-1

The “Big Red Machine” flew out to San Francisco for their first game of the Great Teams Season and left victorious despite only hitting 3 singles and a home run the entire game thanks to all but one of those hits coming in the 4th inning. Ken Griffey took a Sanford 2-2 curveball deep to score himself and Pete Rose and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead they held throughout the rest of the game. The Giants may have outhit the Reds, but not outscore them thanks to player of the game Don Gullett who hurled 8 innings giving up just 1 run on 7 hits. The 1975 Reds get their first win of the season with 2 runs on 4 hits without an error. Disappointed, the 1962 San Francisco Giants only managed to score a lone run in the first while reaching base on 9 hits and no errors.
