Kirk Gibson

  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-8
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-9

The first 5 runs for the Sox were scored by Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, Rudy York and Hal Wagner. For the Tigers, their 5 came from Kirk Gibson, Chet Lemon, Darrell Evans, Lou Whitaker, and Larry Herndon. In the 6th, a triple by Kirk Gibson and an error by Pinky Higgins of the Red Sox gave the Tigers a 2 runs lead, but Boston came back with 3 in the top of the 7th courtesy of 4 singles and a triple from George Metkovich after Dom DiMaggio was ejected from the game in the previous inning. The Tigers grabbed the last 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 7th and 8th to go up 9-8 and stay there. Kirk Gibson had a stellar day going 3 for 5 with 5 RBI’s thanks to a triple and a homer in the 4th. Boston loses with 8 runs on 15 hits and 2 errors. GTS-1909 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1946 Boston Red Sox

Pinky Higgins

  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-3
  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-5

The 1909 Pirates just could not break through offensively to give the Red Sox a run for their money as they scored 3 runs in the 7th thanks to 3 consecutive walks and a pair of hits afterwards, but by that time the Red Sox already had 5 runs on the board. Pesky scored in the 1st after a lead off triple, Pinky Higgins drove home DiMaggio with an RBI double in the 2nd as well as sending Ted Williams across the plate with an RBI double to right in the 4th. Doerr knocked a solo homer in the 5th for a 4-0 lead before Wanger made it 5-0 in the 6th with an RBI single to center. All in all Boston made easy work of the Pirates, and Pink Higgins gets the game ball going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. The Pirates scored 3 runs on 7 hits with no errors. Also without an error, the 1946 Red Sox scored 5 runs on 11 hits.

The 1946 Boston Red Sox reach the Great Teams Season by bearing a .675 winning percentage with 104 wins and only 50 defeats. Hall of Fame left fielder Ted Williams, back from serving in World War II, had the first of his 2 MVP seasons leading the league with a .342 batting average, 38 home runs, and 123 RBI’s.  Despite the best record in the majors, the Red Sox suffered from the Curse of the Bambino, and lost the World Series in Enos Slaughter’s “Mad Dash” of the 7th game of the World Series to the Cardinals.  The 1946 Red Sox are looking for redemption in the Great Teams Season.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants at 1946 Boston Red Sox

Felipe Alou

  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-4
  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-5

Down 1 to nothing in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Boston Red Sox came alive with 4 runs to take a commanding lead thanks to RBI singles by Pesky and Doerr and and 2 run homer to left center by Leon Culberson. They added the winning run in the following frame after Pinky Higgins was driven home by Wally Moses after a lead off triple. The Giants tried to make the comeback after Felipe Alou, who earned player of the game status, knocked a three run homer to account for all of the Giants RBI’s on the day. He also went 2 for 3 with a triple, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. Despite his excellent showing the rest of the team could not get it done and the Giants get the one run loss with 4 runs on 11 hits without an error. Also with zero errors, the Red Sox capture the win with 5 runs on 15 hits.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox at 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates

Jordy Mercer

  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-4
  • 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

Both pitchers got off to a rough start with the Red Sox scoring three runs in the first two innings and the Pirates scoring three in the bottom of the 1st. From there on out both starters settled down, but Pittsburgh remained one step ahead throughout the game. A leadoff homer by Jordy Mercer in the 4th put the Buccos up by one until the top of the 6th when a Wagner single for the Red Sox tied up the game until the bottom of the inning when a Russell Martin hit gave Pittsburgh the lead 5-4. The final three frames saw goose eggs for both teams and the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates took the final game of Interleague Play and the league competition 9 games to 7. The Pirates scored 5 runs on 9 hits with 1 error while the Sox came up short with 4 runs on 8 hits and zero errors. Jordy Mercer takes star distinction going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, a homer, and an RBI. Looking to bounce back from the defeat, Boston will take on the 1962 Dodgers in a game that sees both teams tied for 7 place at the moment.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox 5 Round Recap

red sox generic

Like the Cardinals, the Reds Sox found themselves in close 1 and 2 run games throughout the first 5 rounds of the season. A 1-0 shutout of the 1954 Indians, a 5 to 4  win at home versus the 1962 Giants, a 2-0 shutout loss in Seattle against the 2001 Mariners, a 5-3 win against the 1909 Pirates, and a 9-8 loss in Detroit against the 1984 Tigers have landed Boston at 3-2 and currently in 7th place.  A lack of consistency both with the bats and on the mound have kept the Red Sox from arriving into the upper echelon of teams.  Boston is in feast or famine mode with 2 players, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio both batting .429 and 45% of the rest of the team, including Hall of Famer Ted Williams, batting .200 or lower.  Their next 3 rounds see them face off against the 2013 Pirates, the 1962 Dodgers, and the big bats of the 2nd place 1969 Orioles.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Joel Pineiro

  • 1946 Boston Reds Sox-0
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-2

Both offenses were flat as each pitcher threw solid complete games with the 2001 Mariners coming out on top thanks to a 2 run rally in the 6th that was all they needed to get the win.  Mark McLemore walked and stole a base to begin the inning before Edgar Martinez hit a double to left field to score the winning run and then was driven home by Mike Cameron later in the inning.  Joel Pineiro, the Mariners starting pitcher, gets the game ball with 13 strikeouts thrown in his complete game shutout.  The 1946 Red Sox scored no runs on 3 hits with 1 error.  The 2001 Seattle Mariners scored 2 runs on 6 hits with no errors.

GTS-1954 Cleveland Indians at 1946 Boston Red Sox

dave ferris

  • 1954 Cleveland Indians-0
  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-1

In baseball, a solid pitching duel is always a beauty to behold, and for the Indians and the Red Sox it was just that. Both teams combined for only a single run with 9 hits as Bob Lemon for Cleveland pitched 8 innings and shut down the offense of the Red Sox through 7 before giving up a leadoff homer to Leon Culberson in the bottom of the 8th inning and therefore the game.  He struck out 7 batters and only surrendered 2 other hits in the game.  On the other hand, Dave Ferriss for the Red Sox may have given up more hits, but he allowed none of them to cross the plate and is therefore named player of the game.  The 1954 Indians were shutout with 6 hits and 2 errors.  The 1946 Red Sox scored 1 on the 8th inning blast, but only got 3 hits total without any errors.
