PS-1979 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates

Jesse Tannehill

  • 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates-2
  • 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates-4

Two of the greatest Buccos teams ever faced off and the turn of the century Pirates took home the win. Jesse Tannehill, the game’s star, pitched a superb game going 8 innings giving up 7 hits and only surrendered 2 runs in the 4th inning to get the win.  The 1902 Pirates sandwiched the 1979 team’s 2 runs in the 4th with 2 themselves in the 3rd and the 5th thanks to Tommy Leach and Ginger Beaumont singles in both innings.  Deacon Phillipe got the save and the 1902 Pirates came out victorious.  The 1902 Pirates scored 4 runs on 7 hits without an error while the “We Are Family” Bucs tallied 2 runs on 9 hits with one error.

PS-2013 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates

Alex Cole

  • 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates-4
  • 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

The 1992 Pirates took an early and easy lead scoring a run in the 2nd inning off an RBI single by the pitcher Tim Wakefield and 3 runs in the 3rd thanks to an Alex Cole triple and a Steve Buechele single.  The 2013 Bucs got on the board in the top of the 5th courtesy of an Andrew McCutchen double and made the score 4 to 3 in the 7th.  Adding an insurance run off of another Alex Cole triple, Stan Belinda got the save in the 9th after giving up another run.  The 2013 come up a run short after scoring 4 on 9 hits and no errors.  The 1992 Pirates win with 5 runs on 10 hits and 1 error.  Player of the game honor goes to Alex Cole thanks to his 2 triples, 2 RBI’s, 2 runs scored, and going 3 for 4.

GTS-1909 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1976 Philadelphia Phillies

Tommy Leach

  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-12
  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-2

In the battle of Pennsylvania, the 1909 Pirates slapped around their cross state rival 12 to 2. The deadball era Bucs batted around in both the 1st and 7th innings where they accounted for 4 runs in each frame and they scored 2 runs in both the 5th and the 8th.  Every Pirate hitter except the pitcher tallied a hit, but it is Tommy Leach who takes home the game ball going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, a triple, and team high 3 runs scored.  The Pirates start their season in style, winning with 12 runs on 17 hits despite committing 3 errors.  The Phillies looked out of their element against the Pirates with 4 hits that netted them 2 runs without an error.

ST-1986 New York Mets at 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates

Zane Smith

  • 1986 New York Mets-1
  • 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates-6

A demoralizing 3rd inning proved to be all the Pirates needed to defeat the great ’86 Mets.  Gary Redus led off the inning with a double and the rest of the team came alive adding five runs to their already one run lead on another double, 2 walks, and 3 singles before Redus groundout to second to end the onslaught.  New York got their only run in the top of the 8th off of a Lenny Dykstra single to end the game down by five instead of six.  The Mets lose on the road with 1 run on 6 hits and no errors.  The Pirates take the easy win with 6 runs on 12 hits and zero errors.  Pirates pitcher Zane Smith takes the game ball after a dependable 8 innings pitched, surrendering 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 9 and only walking 2.
