GTS-1976 Philadelphia Phillies at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Brooks Robinson

  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-5
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-11

Trying to go swing for swing with the 1969 Orioles is never a good idea. Unfortunately, the 1976 Phillies had to learn that lesson the hard way. A 3 run crushing shot to center by Mike Schmidt started Philadelphia with a decent lead in the top of the 1st, but in the bottom half of the inning, Boog Powell matched Schmidt’s 3 run bomb with one of his own, and that was followed up with a Dave Johnson RBI single to right. The Phils knotted it at 4 with a solo homer by Greg Luzinski in the 3rd, but the bottom of the inning put the game out of reach for the bicentennial boys of Philadelphia. Frank Robinson scored on a Chico Salmon single before the other Robinson, Brooks, crushed a bases loaded grand slam. Don Buford scored shortly thereafter for a 6 run inning and a 10-4 lead for the birds. Another homer by Brooks gave the Orioles 11 on the day, and a solo shot by Dick Allen reduced the damage for the Phillies. Despite hitting 3 home runs, Philly loses with 5 runs on 6 hits and 1 error. Also with 3 homers, Baltimore wins with 11 runs on 14 hits and no errors. If it is not obvious, it should be. Brooks Robinson went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and a solo homer to capture the game ball.

GTS-1969 Baltimore Orioles at 1986 New York Mets

Kevin Mitchell

  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-3
  • 1986 New York Mets-4

A competitive game for two of the best teams in the Great Teams Season saw the New York Mets squeak by and remain in first place for the time being. Three walks in the second helped Baltimore take a 1-0 lead, and a solo bomb in the 3rd by Frank Robinson gave them a 2 run advantage. Darryl Strawberry added a solo deep blast of his own in the bottom of the 4th, and Kevin Mitchell, who came into the game after an injury to Ray Knight, hit a 2 out RBI double to knot the game at 2 a piece. New York grabbed their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the 7th courtesy of RBI’s by the Mets pitcher Sid Fernandez and the aforementioned Mitchell. The Orioles still had some fight in them, but were only able to manage another run on a Paul Blair home run in the top of the 8th. Baltimore loses with 3 runs on 10 hits and no errors. The Mets will with 4 runs on 10 hits and 1 error. Kevin Mitchell takes home the game ball as he went 2 for 2 after coming into the game late with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s.

GTS: 2001 Seattle Mariners at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-3
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-4

Most of the time games are won or lost for what you do throughout the course of the game and not just a single inning. By that completely rational logic, Seattle lost the game because they could only manage 3 runs in the second inning and nothing throughout the rest of the game. The Mariners grabbed those 3 runs with a solo homer from Cameron and a 2 run shot 2 batters later from Bell. On the other hand the Orioles had single run innings in the bottom of the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th to take the win. Boog Powell went 4 for 4 throughout the game with 2 singles, a double and a homer in the 7th. The Orioles snatch the win with 4 runs on 10 hits with 2 errors while the Mariners tallied 3 runs on only 5 hits and 3 errors.

1969 Baltimore Orioles

orioles generic

The 1969 Baltimore Orioles punched their ticket into the Great Teams Season with 109 wins, 53 losses, a sweep of the Minnesota Twins in the first ever ALCS, and the start of 3 straight World Series appearances. Despite losing the fall classic to the “Miracle” Mets in one of the greatest upsets in Series history, the Orioles squad of 1969 is considered one of the best of all time by many baseball pundits.  Behind hitting superstars Frank Robinson and Boog Powell, fielding superstar Brooks Robinson, and pitching greats Mike Ceullar, Dave McNally, and Jim Palmer, the 1969 Orioles should be tough for even the greatest teams of all time to contend with game in and game out.

GTS-1969 Baltimore Orioles at 1961 New York Yankees

Bill Stafford

  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-1
  • 1961 New York Yankees-3

In the battle of the big bats, it was anything but as both heavy hitting teams combined for only 4 runs and 11 hits. Both teams struggled throughout the first five frames until a Brooks Robinson double scored the Orioles only run of the game in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning Robinson accounted for an error that led to the Yanks scoring Kubek, Mantle, and Maris for 3 runs and eventually the game. Yankees pitcher Stafford had another solid start and is named player of the game giving up 1 run on 4 hits in a nearly complete game pitched. The Orioles also tallied 2 errors in the contest. New York plated 3 on 7 hits without an error and switch places in the standing with the Orioles as they capture the number two spot.

GTS-2015 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Dave Johnson

  • 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates-3
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-5

The potent offense of the Orioles was on display again as they hosted the 2015 Pirates. Second baseman Dave Johnson hit a 2 run homer in the second and Don Buford added run number 3 on a single to left field shortly thereafter.  In the third the Orioles knocked Pirates starter Gerrit Cole out of the game after only 2.1 innings pitched because of another 2 run shot by Paul Blair giving Baltimore a 5 run lead by the end of the 3rd inning.  The Pirates battled back with a 2 RBI single by Sean Rodriguez in the 6th and an RBI single by Gregory Polanco in the top of the 8th, but 3 runs was all they could manage.  The 2015 Pirates scored 3 runs on 14 hits with no errors, but drop the game to Baltimore’s 5 runs on 11 hits and no errors.  Despite being knocked out of the game after a collision with the pitcher, Dave Johnson earns player of the game honors going 2 for 2 with a home run and 2 RBI’s.  The 1969 Orioles remain in 2nd place and take on the 1961 Yankees who look to hand Baltimore their second defeat of the season.

GTS-1969 Baltimore Orioles 5 Round Recap

orioles generic

So far in my Great Teams Season, the 1969 Orioles have impressed. Averaging 6.2 runs per game in no small thanks to a league leading 13 team home runs, the Orioles currently reside in 2nd place only because of a head to head loss to the 1st place Mets.  A 9-6 win over the Twins, and a 4-3 win against the Tigers began their season before they dropped their only game of the season to the 1986 Mets, 4 to 3.  They then went on to a 4-3 win over the solid pitching of the 2001 Seattle Mariners and destroyed the ’76 Phillies 11-5 in the final game of Round 5.  As previously mentioned, the Orioles offense has overwhelmed teams and a lot of that credit goes to first baseman Boog Powell.  Powell, who is the season’s front runner for MVP at this juncture, leads the league in batting average at .588, RBI’s at 9, home runs at 5, and runs at 7.  It remains to be seen if he can keep up this pace heading into interleague play against the 1909 Pirates, the 1961 Yankees and the 1946 Red Sox in the next 3 rounds.

GTS-1984 Detroit Tigers at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-3
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-4

With both teams heading into their second game of the season at 1 and 0, the Tigers and Orioles each gave a superb single inning of offensive prowess. In the top of the 1st, the Tigers took an early lead with 3 runs on 5 consecutive hits including a double by Chet Lemon. On the other hand, the Orioles got on the board in the 6th, scoring 4 runs on back to back bombs: a 3 run shot by Boog Powell and a solo knock from Chico Salmon. Neither team was able to score outside of the 1st and 6th innings, and the 1969 Baltimore Orioles came out with a 4 to 3 win. Despite only being able to get one hit, it was a big one and Boog Powell gets player of the game honors, his second in two games played thus far in the season. The 1984 Tigers got their 3 runs on 8 hits with 1 error defensively. The Orioles got their 4 runs on 8 hits with 1 error as well.

GTS-1965 Minnesota Twins at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 1965 Minnesota Twins-6
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-9

Offense aplenty in this battle of 1960’s powerhouse AL teams. The 1965 Twins scored 3 runs in the 5th, 2 runs in the 7th thanks to back to back long balls from Oliva and Versalles, and a single run in the 9th, but it was not enough to stop the Baltimore Orioles who scored a run in every inning except the 5th and 7th on their way to a 9 to 6 victory at home.  The 2 teams combined for a total of 7 home runs with the Orioles accounting for 5 of that total.  Boog Powell was the game’s star knocking 2 of the 5 out in consecutive at bats in the 6th and 8th innings, and with a single in the 1st for a 3 for 4 showing.  The Twins scored 6 runs on 11 hits without an error while Baltimore totaled 9 with 16 hits and an error for the win.
