GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Brett Boone

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-5
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-6

The longest game yet of the season sees the Mariners walk off the Reds in 13 innings. Seattle grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and was up 3-1 after the 3rd, but 4 unanswered runs by Cincinnati had the Reds up 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th. A lead off pinch hit single by Stan Javier was followed up by hits from Ichiro Suzuki, Mark McLemore, and John Olerud tying the game at 5 runs a piece. It was not until the bottom of the 13th inning that the contest was decided after a Dan Wilson double led off the inning and a 2 out RBI single from Edgar Martinez ended the affair. Player of the game Bret Boone had a day of 3’s with 3 hits, all doubles, and 3 RBI’s. The Reds lost a heartbreaker with 5 runs on 10 hits with no errors. The Mariners walk off with 6 runs on 12 hits and 1 error.

GTS: 2001 Seattle Mariners at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-3
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-4

Most of the time games are won or lost for what you do throughout the course of the game and not just a single inning. By that completely rational logic, Seattle lost the game because they could only manage 3 runs in the second inning and nothing throughout the rest of the game. The Mariners grabbed those 3 runs with a solo homer from Cameron and a 2 run shot 2 batters later from Bell. On the other hand the Orioles had single run innings in the bottom of the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th to take the win. Boog Powell went 4 for 4 throughout the game with 2 singles, a double and a homer in the 7th. The Orioles snatch the win with 4 runs on 10 hits with 2 errors while the Mariners tallied 3 runs on only 5 hits and 3 errors.

2001 Seattle Mariners

The 2001 Seattle Mariners come into the Great Teams Season with the most single season wins in history, 116, to their credit. With a solid pitching core and a deep offense led by AL MVP, AL Rookie of the Year, AL Batting Champion, and AL Stolen Base Leader Ichiro Suzuki, the Mariners are deep and will be a tough contender for any team…ever.  As the greatest team to never play in the World Series, the 2001 Seattle Mariners are looking to etch their names into the history books once more.

GTS-1942 St. Louis Cardinals at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Walker Cooper

  • 1942 St. Louis Cardinals-3
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-1

The Mariners jumped out to an early 1 run lead in the second after a Guillen single, but after that, the game’s hero, Mort Cooper goose egged Seattle throwing a complete game with 7 hits, 7 strikeouts and 3 walks. St. Louis tied things up in the 4th, and added a winning run in the 7th after a Stan Musial RBI double. The Cards added a bit of insurance in the 8th, but it was not needed as Cooper’s pitching effectively shut down the Mariners. St. Louis gets with W with 3 runs on 12 hits. Seattle gets the L with 1 run on 7 hits. Both teams did not commit a single error in the contest.

GTS-1992 Pittsburgh Pirates at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Brett Boone

  • 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates-4
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-7

The Mariners, who have struggled thus far offensively this season, tallied 10 hits on their way to a 7-4 victory against the 1992 Pirates. Seattle struck first in the 1st with a run and added single run innings in the 4th and 5th as well, but Pittsburgh fought back with a run in the 4th, two in the 5th, and another in the 6th to lead the game 4-3 going into the bottom of the 7th. A leadoff walk by Suzuki started a Mariners rally thanks to a base hit from McLemore and two errors on the Bucs that saw Pittsburgh give up three runs and the game in the inning. Seattle added another run in the following frame and shut down the Pirates with four strikeouts in the final two innings. Bret Boone is named the game’s star going 2 for 4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI in the 5th. Seattle improves their record to 4-2 and sit in 5th place with 7 runs on 10 hits and 2 errors. The Pirates came up short with 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 errors as well. In Round 6 the Mariner hope to keep their bats alive as they take on the 11th place Indians.

GTS-2001 Seattle Mariners 5 Round Recap

mariners generic

While I expected a bit more from the 116 win 2001 Mariners because of their solid pitching staff, at 3-2 and in 6th place, they remain in the mix with their only losses coming at the hands of the 3rd place 1942 Cardinals 3-1, and the 2nd place Baltimore Orioles 4-3.  In their other 3 affairs they have played well including 2 shutouts, a 3-0 win at Chicago and a 2-0 victory at home to the ’46 Red Sox to go along with a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds.  With their superstar Ichiro Suzuki only going 3 for 23 so far and the rest of the batting order struggling, their pitching staff has kept them winning with solid starts from Freddy Garcia, Aaron Sele, and Joel Pineiro.  Their pitching should remain strong in their next 3 games against the 1992 Pirates, the ’54 Cleveland Indians, and the ’84 Tigers.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Joel Pineiro

  • 1946 Boston Reds Sox-0
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-2

Both offenses were flat as each pitcher threw solid complete games with the 2001 Mariners coming out on top thanks to a 2 run rally in the 6th that was all they needed to get the win.  Mark McLemore walked and stole a base to begin the inning before Edgar Martinez hit a double to left field to score the winning run and then was driven home by Mike Cameron later in the inning.  Joel Pineiro, the Mariners starting pitcher, gets the game ball with 13 strikeouts thrown in his complete game shutout.  The 1946 Red Sox scored no runs on 3 hits with 1 error.  The 2001 Seattle Mariners scored 2 runs on 6 hits with no errors.

GTS-2001 Seattle Mariners at 1906 Chicago Cubs

freddy garcia

  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-3
  • 1906 Chicago Cubs-0

When two high quality pitching staffs meet, high quality pitching ensues. Both Freddy Garcia for the Mariners and Jack Pfeister for the Cubs pitched wonderful complete games accounting for 15 strikeouts between them, but it was Garcia who earns the win thanks to timely hitting and quality base running from his offense.  Despite not getting a single hit in 7 of their 9 innings, the Mariners were able to get 3 consecutive singles in the 2nd to account for the winning run of the game as well as a double and a single in the 9th that scored John Olerud.  Their other run came in the 6th when a walk and steal by Mark McLemore lead to a pair of ground outs that scored him without the team registering a hit.  On the flip side the Cubs spread their few hits out and were never able to plate a runner.  Obviously, Freddy Garcia gets the game ball with his complete game shutout and 7 strikeouts.  The 2001 Mariners scored 3 runs on 5 hits with 2 errors.  The 1906 Cubs put up zero on 5 hits with only 1 error.
