RTUP-1925 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1921 New York Giants

Irish Meusel

  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-2
  • 1921 New York Giants-3

The Pirates got on the board early when 3 singles to begin the game scored Max Carey on a Kiki Cuyler single, but when Eddie Moore got greedy 2 batters later and tried to score from 3rd on a fly out to center, George Burns gunned him out to stop the Bucco rally. In the bottom of the 1st, New York tied it up on a High Pockets Kelly single to center, but Pittsburgh went up again in the top of the 2nd on a double play ground out that scored George Grantham. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Pirates until the bottom of the 8th inning. While Emil Yde threw a bend but don’t break solid 6 innings, he finally broke on a 2 RBI Irish Meusel single to left that gave the Giants the lead and the game. Irish Meusel’s key base hit earns him the game ball. He went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s a double and a run scored in the 1st. The Pirates lose with 2 runs on 7 hits. New York wins with 3 runs on 11 hits. Both teams were responsible for no errors.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates

Kiki Cuyler

  • 1921 New York Giants-2
  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

The Buccos grabbed an early lead and never relented. With Eddie Moore anxiously standing on first base in the bottom of the 1st, Kiki Cuyler blasted a homer that put the Pirates up early 2-0. In the 3rd, Max Carey led things off with a solo shot before Pie Traynor racked a double to left to score Eddie Moore and George Grantham scored Cuyler on a ground out to second. The Giants made a failed comeback attempt starting in the 6th when Johnny Rawlings plated pitcher Fred Toney on an RBI single. New York grabbed their second and final run in the 8th on a groundout to 3rd that scored Frankie Frisch. The Giants scored 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 error, and Pittsburgh scored 5 runs on 11 hits without an error. Kiki Cuyler secures player of the game honor after a 3 for 4, 2 RBI, a homer, and a double on the day.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates

Johnny Rawlings

  • 1921 New York Giants-5
  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-3

Errors hurt, and the Pirates committed 3 of them in this game that cost them 3 runs as well as the game. Eddie Moore had a wild throw to begin the game that saw Johnny Rawlings plate Frankie Frisch to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. The Pirates took a 2-1 advantage in the 4th after RBI’s from Glenn Wright and George Grantham, but in the top of the following inning 2 more errors on the Bucs saw the Giants score George Burns, Art Nehf, and Frankie Frisch for a 3 run lead. The Pirates added a solo homer in the 8th by Kiki Cuyler, but it was too little too late as the Giants win with 5 runs on 8 hits with no errors, and the Pirates lose with 3 runs on 6 hits and a costly 3 errors. Johnny Rawlings gets the game ball after going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants at 1975 Oakland A’s

Chuck Hiller

  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-8
  • 1975 Oakland A’s-6

The game was much closer than it should have been given 3 costly errors on the Giants. A 2nd inning error on shortstop Pagan gave up 2 runs, an error on Davenport in the 4th saw him score when the next batter, Claudell Washington hit a homer, and Reggie Jackson scored on a double after reaching on another error by Davenport. Luckily for San Francisco their offense came up big or else this one would have been a disappointing loss. The Giants scored 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 3 more in the 4th, and one each in the 5th and 8th innings. Chuck Hiller is the game’s star going 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. The Giants win with 8 runs on 16 hits and 3 errors. The A’s grab 6 on 8 with only 1 error.

Walker Cooper

  • 1942 St. Louis Cardinals-9
  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-7

With 3 runs in the top of the 1st the Cardinals took a quick lead that was undone when they gave up 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of four singles and a double. Rattled after the the start of the game, Cardinals pitcher Mort Cooper shut down the Giants for the next 6 innings and gave his team a chance to build up a sizable lead. St. Louis scored 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, another single run in the 6th and 2 more in the top of the 7th to lead the Giants 9 to 4. San Fran came back with a 3 run 8th, but it only accomplished the task of lessening the loss. The Cardinals catcher Walker Cooper was the game’s standout performer going 3 for 5 with a 3 run homer in the first along with singles in the 3rd and 4th and a run in the third. The Cardinals total 9 runs on 15 hits without an error. The Giants come up short with 7 runs on 12 hits and 1 error.

1962 San Francisco Giants

In 1962, the San Francisco Giants became the first NL Champions in a 162 game season winning 103 games and a 3 game playoff tiebreaker against their rival the Los Angeles Dodgers, but fell to the NY Yankees in a 7 game World Series despite dominating in nearly every category except the scoreboard. The Giants did not have a losing record against any other team in the National League and after falling just 3 feet short of a World Series title, the 1962 San Francisco Giants are looking to show their greatness against the rest of the teams in the Great Teams Seasons.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants at 1946 Boston Red Sox

Felipe Alou

  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-4
  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-5

Down 1 to nothing in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Boston Red Sox came alive with 4 runs to take a commanding lead thanks to RBI singles by Pesky and Doerr and and 2 run homer to left center by Leon Culberson. They added the winning run in the following frame after Pinky Higgins was driven home by Wally Moses after a lead off triple. The Giants tried to make the comeback after Felipe Alou, who earned player of the game status, knocked a three run homer to account for all of the Giants RBI’s on the day. He also went 2 for 3 with a triple, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. Despite his excellent showing the rest of the team could not get it done and the Giants get the one run loss with 4 runs on 11 hits without an error. Also with zero errors, the Red Sox capture the win with 5 runs on 15 hits.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants at 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates

Steve Blass

  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-1
  • 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates-6

For a team averaging 6.4 runs a game so far this season, the 1962 Giants looked deflated as they faced off against Steve Blass and the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates. Managing only 1 run on a Tom Haller home run in the 7th inning, the Giants sat back and watched as the Pirates score 3 runs in the 3rd from a Dave Cash ground out to third and a Willie Stargell 2 run home run just over the fence in right field.  Dave Cash added another RBI from a 1 out double in the 5th and Manny Sanguillen blasted a 2 RBI triple to center field in the 8th to account for the Pirates’ fifth and sixth runs.  Pirates’ pitcher Steve Blass went 8 innings giving up 1 run on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts and is awarded player of the game.  The 1962 Giants scored 1 run on 7 hits with 1 error while the Bucs score 6 runs on 9 hits with no errors.  The 1962 now stand at 2-4 and currently drop into 12th place.   Things do not get easier for them as they take on the 1st place Mets in Round 6.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants 5 Round Recap

giants san fran generic

As the team that bested the 1962 Dodgers in 1962, the San Francisco Giants have not had much luck either in the Great Teams Season despite averaging a league high 6.4 runs per game. 3 straight losses to begin the season; a 2-1 loss versus the Reds, a 5-4 defeat by the ’46 Red Sox, and falling to the Cardinals 9 to 7 were frustrating, but they followed it up with an 8-6 win at Oakland and a high scoring, 12-7 win at home against the 1965 Twins.  Offensively speaking, the top 3 of the Giants batting order are all tied with a league leading 11 hits which includes Harvey Kuenn’s best batting average of every player in the league at .550.  Having yet to defeat any team in the top half of the standings, the Giants will get their chance after meeting the 1971 Pirates in interleague play as they face the 1986 New York Mets and the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates.
