GTS-1962 Los Angeles Dodgers at 1942 St. Louis Cardinals

Johnny Hopp

  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-7
  • 1942 St. Louis Cardinals-8

A messy scorecard, thanks to a record setting combined number of hits for both teams, saw the 1942 Cardinals eek out the victory despite a late surge by the Dodgers. After Johnny Hopp scored on an RBI double from Marty Marion in the second put the Cardinals into an early 1-0 lead, the Dodgers scored 2 on a Tommy Davis double in the 3rd. St. Louis scored 1 run in their halves of the 4th and 5th inning before L.A. tied up the game at 3 in the top of the 6th. In the bottom half of the inning however, the Cardinals tallied 4 runs take the lead 7-3. Another St. Louis run from a solo homer in the bottom of the 7th gave them a 5 run lead. The Cards let their foot off of the gas as the Dodgers made it 8-4 in the 8th, and then a 3 run bomb from Ron Fairly brought Los Angeles within 1 run of tying up the game. Cardinals closer Howie Pollet closed out the contest with a fly to left and a groundout to first. The Dodgers lose with 7 runs on 13 hits and no errors. St. Louis wins with 8 runs on 16 hits and 1 error. Johnny Hopp snags the ball for the game’s best performance as he goes 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored as well as catching the final out of the game.

GTS-1954 Cleveland Indians at 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers

Daryl Spencer

  • 1954 Cleveland Indians-3
  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-6

Even though they were outhit for the game, all the Dodgers needed was the 1st inning to secure their victory over the Cleveland Indians. After 4 singles and a walk, Daryl Spencer hit a difficult bouncer to second that saw him safe at first, and the winning run of the game scoring on the error by Avila. Spencer also added a two run homer in the 6th to earn the game ball. Try as they might to make the comeback, Cleveland could only add a run in the 4th and another in the 5th. The Indians lose with 3 runs on 10 hits with 1 error, and the Dodgers plated 6 on 8 hits without an error.

1962 Los Angeles Dodgers

dodgers la generic

The 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers come into the Great Teams Season having won a Los Angeles record of 102 wins and tied for the National League title. The LA Times described the season as a “gamut of sublime” with Maury Will’s 100 stolen bases, Don Drysdale’s 25 wins and Sandy Koufax’s no hitter despite having a multitude of fielding issues.  Unfortunately the 1962 Dodgers would lose a 3 game playoff series and the pennant to our next team the San Francisco Giants.  The Los Angeles Dodgers of 1962 are looking to finally have something to cheer about by winning a pennant against some of the greatest teams in history.

GTS-1975 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers

Ron Perranoski

  • 1975 Pittsburgh Pirates-3
  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-4

How the Dodgers pulled this one out I will never know. The 1975 Pirates dominated in every facet of the game except the scoreboard and, despite a valiant attempt, came up a single run short of victory.  With an RBI single from Roseboro and a 2 RBI base hit to left from Maury Wills, the Dodgers took an early 3 run lead in the 2nd.  Despite solid pitching from Jerry Ruess of the Pirates, Los Angeles added a fourth run in the 6th.  The Pirates attempted the comeback, scoring runs in the 6th, 7th and 9th, but ultimately failed in their attempt when, with runners on second and third, Manny Sanguillen grounded out to short to end the game.  With their victory the Dodgers improve their record to 3 and 3 and move into ??? place.  Los Angeles scored 4 runs on only 5 hits without an error while the 1975 Pirates could only put up 3 runs on 13 hits and no errors.  Despite giving up a run, Ron Perranoski is named player of the game thanks to earning the save in spite of the Buccos comeback.  Round 6 sees the 1962 Dodgers facing off against the 1946 Red Sox.

GTS-1962 Los Angeles Dodgers 5 Round Recap

dodgers la generic

The 1962 Dodgers have been disappointed with their season thus far, but they have a lot to be hopeful for going into the future. Two of their three losses have come to top 3 teams with a 6-5 loss to the first place Mets in round 3 and an 8-7 loss against the 3rd place Cardinals in round 5.  A 6-2 loss in Cincinnati was disheartening, but with an 8-6 win at Chicago and a 6-3 defeat of the 1954 Indians the Dodgers have not given up yet despite a current standing of 10th place.  During their 1962 season fielding issues may have plagued them, but as the only team that has yet to give up an error so far, their defense is playing top notch ball.  Throw in a league leading 9 RBI’s by Ron Fairly and you have a team that can make a decent run in the remaining 11 rounds of the season.  They will be tested though as they battle the 1975 Pirates and the 1946 Red Sox at home before going on the road to take on the 1961 New York Yankees.

1955 World Series Replay Game 7

Johnny Podres

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-13
  • 1955 New York Yankees-2

Oct 4th, 1955-After coming back 3 games to 1 to tie things up and send it to a 7th game, the Yankees were feeling like luck was on their side, but it just was not to be as the big bats from Brooklyn came back with a vengeance after only scoring 1 run in the last 2 games.  The Dodgers piled up 15 hits including 3 triples and 3 home runs to put all the worries to rest and finally get vengeance on their nemesis Yankees.  Again Podres gave up only 1 earned run on a 5th inning homer to Andy Carey and striking out 7 on his way to his 2nd win of the series.  A big 6 run 1st set the stage for an unexciting finale to a back and forth series that promised to be interesting, but didn’t deliver as the Dodgers made easy work of the Bronx Bombers.  Brooklyn scored 13 runs on 15 hits with 1 error while the defeated Yanks only scored 2 runs on 7 hits with 0 errors.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 27 Oct 2016. In the original game 7, the Brooklyn Dodgers won by the score of 2-0.

1955 World Series Replay Game 6

Hank Bauer

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-0
  • 1955 New York Yankees-1

Oct 3rd, 1955-Heart means a lot and in baseball it means so much more. Down 3 games to 1 the Yankees never gave up.  They never faltered.  They never thought it was over.  Ford may have been the reason behind the Yanks wins in game 1 and game 5, but he was nowhere to be found and instead Tommy Byrne showed up and delivered a shut-out in game 6 to keep the New York darlin’s alive.  All that was needed was a 2 out double from Hank Bauer to bring the series to a 3-3 tie and a decisive 7th game.  His crucial 4th inning RBI double was all the Yanks required to secure a victory in game 6 and send this World Series to a do or die 7th game.  Complete games by both pitchers produced a Yankees victory with 1 run on 8 hits and no errors.  They defeated the Dodgers, who had 0 runs on 6 hits with no errors.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 26 Oct 2016. In the original game 6, the New York Yankees won by the score of 5-1. Also on this date in 1955, The Mickey Mouse Club premieres on ABC.

1955 World Series Replay Game 5

Whitey Ford

  • 1955 New York Yankees-4
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-1

Oct 2nd, 1955-The Yankees finally discover Brooklyn’s kryptonite. Whitey Ford, who pitched the Yankees to a 6-1 victory in game 1, returned to shut down the best offense in the majors again.  Unfortunately, for the Yankees they cannot pitch him every game because he put up another 1 run shut down of the boys in blue and white.  Ford helped himself with an RBI groundout to short in the 2nd inning.  Hank Bauer followed with a 2 RBI base hit that proved to be all the Bronx bombers needed to secure the victory.  In front of 36,796, New York scored 3 in the 2nd and added a solo shot from Berra in the 9th to bring the series closer with a 4-1 victory.  The Dodgers got their lone run thanks to a solo home run from Furillo in the fourth, but that proved to be all they could muster against the dominate Ford.  Yankees win with 4 runs on 6 hits with no errors.  The Dodgers lose with 1 run on 4 hits and no errors.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 22 Oct 2016. In the original game 5, the Brooklyn Dodgers won by the score of 5-3. Also on this date in 1955, Alfred Hitchcock Presents premieres on CBS.

1955 World Series Replay Game 4

Roy Campanella

  • 1955 New York Yankees-2
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-10

Oct 1st, 1955-For a series that has not seen a home run since game 1 four days earlier, game 4 saw the ball go deep four times. “The Mick” had a 2 run shot for the Yankees only runs of the game while the Dodgers got back to back bombs from Snider and Hodges in the 7th and a solo shot from Campanella to lead off the 8th while coasting to a 10-2 victory.  For the first time this series the Yankees had to go deep into their bullpen while watching the Dodgers’ starter Clem Labine go the full 9 innings for the win, but it was Brooklyn’s offense that were the heroes behind 5 for 3 showings and homers from Campenella and Hodges.  34,242 came out to watch their beloved Dodgers get within 1 game of the championship.  The Yankees scored 2 runs on 9 hits with 2 errors while Brooklyn put up 10 on 12 hits with 1 error.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 20 Oct 2016. In the original game 4, the Brooklyn Dodgers won by the score of 8-5.
