1991PS-1991 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1991 Chicago Cubs

Zane Smith

  • Pittsburgh Pirates 7 (5-1)
  • Chicago Cubs 3 (1-5)

In the final game of the series, Chicago came out early, but wasn’t able to sustain it and were swept in 3 games. Ryne Sandberg gave the Cubs a 1st inning lead with a 2 run blast to start the festivities. In the 4th however, the Pirates came alive and singles by Van Slyke, Bonds, and King along with a double by LaValliere put Pittsburgh back on top with a 3-2 score. A pair of back to back trips from Gary Redus and Jay Bell to lead off the 5th tacked on another insurance run for the Bucs before back to back homers in the 7th by Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla all but assured victory despite the Cubs snagging a solo home run from Luis Salazar in the 8th who came into the game for an injured Mark Grace. There were plenty of heroes in the game offensively, but Pittsburgh starter Zane Smith gets the game ball with a win on 8.1 innings pitched with 3 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. Pittsburgh completes their first road trip and first series sweep with 7 runs on 12 hits without an error. The Cubbies fall with 3 runs on 7 hits and an error.

1991PS-1991 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1991 Chicago Cubs

John Wehner

  • Pittsburgh Pirates 2 (3-1)
  • Chicago Cubs 1 (1-3)

In their first game of on the season on the road, the Pirates very nearly ended the game in defeat, but some timely pinch hitting in the final frame gave them a hard fought victory. Both pitchers threw great games as neither team was able to score a single run in the first six frames before the Cubbies got on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning with a leadoff home run from Andre Dawson. The game remained with Chicago up by a single solitary run until the bottom of the 9th when Pittsburgh went to their bench. After a lead off strikeout from Barry Bonds, Jeff King reached when Cubs shortstop Shawn Dunston bobbled an easily fielded ball. Don Slaught came into pinch hit for catcher Mike LaValliere and drove King to 3rd with a single to left. Next pinch hitter Lloyd McClendon drove King home with a double. John Wehner then came in to pinch hit and, with a single to right, brought Don Slaught home across the plate to score the winning run. For his game winning single, John Wehner gets the game ball. Pittsburgh wins with 2 runs on 9 hits with no errors. The Cubs lose with a difficult error and 1 run on 8 hits.

GTS-1906 Chicago Cubs at 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates

Willie Stargell

  • 1906 Chicago Cubs-4
  • 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

What was expected to be an easy win by the 1979 Pirates became interesting after some Bert Blyleven fastball chin music on Cubs first baseball Frank Chance caused a bench clearing brawl in the 3rd.  When all was said and done the Pirates saw their starting pitcher, Dave Parker, and Bill Robinson ejected.  The Cubs lost their starting pitcher Pfeister, the aforementioned Chance, and Joe Tinker, all three sent to the locker room for the remainder of the game.  When things calmed down and with a 1 to 0 score going into the 5th the Cubs added 3 runs off of a Schulte home run that gave the underdog Cubs a 4 to nothing lead.  The Pirates looked on the verge of defeat in the 9th inning, down 4 to 1, when a timely error by Harry Steinfeldt saw the Pirates score the eventual tying run off of a Phil Garner triple to send the game into extra innings.  Both teams put up goose eggs in the 10th, but in the bottom of the 11th, Pittsburgh captain Willie Stargell launched an opposite field solo home run to walk off the game in style.  The Cubs suffer their 5th, most heartbreaking loss yet, and currently hold onto a weak 15th place in the standings after 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 disappointing errors.  The “We are Family” Pirates of 1979 walk off with 5 runs on 9 hits without an error.  Going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and a game winning HR, Willie Stargell gives himself a Stargell star as player of the game.  In the next round the Cubs face off against the 1909 Pirates.

GTS-1906 Chicago Cubs 5 Round Recap

cubs generic

After 5 games, the 1906 Chicago Cubs currently stand in 15th place.  With 3 straight losses to begin their season, an 8-6 loss against the 1962 Dodgers, a 3 to nothing shutout at home versus the 2001 Mariners and a 4-2 loss versus the last place 1965 Minnesota Twins, the cubbies surprised everyone with a 4-1 win on the road against the 1984 Tigers.  Sadly, the one victory was all they could manage in the first third of the season losing 7-3 in round five to the 1975 Oakland A’s.  Despite solid pitching from Mordecai Brown and Ed Reulbach, the team has had to contend with a weak output from their offense and a far and away league leading 10 errors defensively.  At the plate, Frank Schulte leads the team in RBI’s and runs with Johnny Kling going 8 for 20 and an impressive .400 average.  Next up for the team from the windy city is an away game against the “We Are Family” 1979 Pirates in interleague play, a return home against the 1909 Pirates, and then back on the road against the surging 1954 Cleveland Indians.

GTS-2001 Seattle Mariners at 1906 Chicago Cubs

freddy garcia

  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-3
  • 1906 Chicago Cubs-0

When two high quality pitching staffs meet, high quality pitching ensues. Both Freddy Garcia for the Mariners and Jack Pfeister for the Cubs pitched wonderful complete games accounting for 15 strikeouts between them, but it was Garcia who earns the win thanks to timely hitting and quality base running from his offense.  Despite not getting a single hit in 7 of their 9 innings, the Mariners were able to get 3 consecutive singles in the 2nd to account for the winning run of the game as well as a double and a single in the 9th that scored John Olerud.  Their other run came in the 6th when a walk and steal by Mark McLemore lead to a pair of ground outs that scored him without the team registering a hit.  On the flip side the Cubs spread their few hits out and were never able to plate a runner.  Obviously, Freddy Garcia gets the game ball with his complete game shutout and 7 strikeouts.  The 2001 Mariners scored 3 runs on 5 hits with 2 errors.  The 1906 Cubs put up zero on 5 hits with only 1 error.
