GTS-1969 Baltimore Orioles at 1986 New York Mets

Kevin Mitchell

  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-3
  • 1986 New York Mets-4

A competitive game for two of the best teams in the Great Teams Season saw the New York Mets squeak by and remain in first place for the time being. Three walks in the second helped Baltimore take a 1-0 lead, and a solo bomb in the 3rd by Frank Robinson gave them a 2 run advantage. Darryl Strawberry added a solo deep blast of his own in the bottom of the 4th, and Kevin Mitchell, who came into the game after an injury to Ray Knight, hit a 2 out RBI double to knot the game at 2 a piece. New York grabbed their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the 7th courtesy of RBI’s by the Mets pitcher Sid Fernandez and the aforementioned Mitchell. The Orioles still had some fight in them, but were only able to manage another run on a Paul Blair home run in the top of the 8th. Baltimore loses with 3 runs on 10 hits and no errors. The Mets will with 4 runs on 10 hits and 1 error. Kevin Mitchell takes home the game ball as he went 2 for 2 after coming into the game late with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s.

GTS-1976 Philadelphia Phillies at 1984 Detroit Tigers

Tom Underwood

  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-3
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-2

Both teams started out slow. The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the 5th inning when a bases loaded situation saw a run score because of a Mike Schmidt error. In the top of the 6th the Phillies came back however thanks to an error on Howard Johnson that started a run that saw the Phillies plate Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, and Jay Johnstone for a 3-1 lead. The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the 7th when an error on Dick Allen scored Larry Herndon. Tom Underwood’s day was finished after he closed out that inning and he earns player of the game honor after throwing 7 innings with 2 unearned runs, 5 hits, 6 strikeouts, and 5 walks. Wayne Twitchell earned the save in the 9th to give the Phillies the win with 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 errors. The Tigers drop another one with 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 error.

GTS-1962 San Francisco Giants at 1975 Oakland A’s

Chuck Hiller

  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-8
  • 1975 Oakland A’s-6

The game was much closer than it should have been given 3 costly errors on the Giants. A 2nd inning error on shortstop Pagan gave up 2 runs, an error on Davenport in the 4th saw him score when the next batter, Claudell Washington hit a homer, and Reggie Jackson scored on a double after reaching on another error by Davenport. Luckily for San Francisco their offense came up big or else this one would have been a disappointing loss. The Giants scored 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 3 more in the 4th, and one each in the 5th and 8th innings. Chuck Hiller is the game’s star going 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. The Giants win with 8 runs on 16 hits and 3 errors. The A’s grab 6 on 8 with only 1 error.

GTS-1909 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1946 Boston Red Sox

Pinky Higgins

  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-3
  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-5

The 1909 Pirates just could not break through offensively to give the Red Sox a run for their money as they scored 3 runs in the 7th thanks to 3 consecutive walks and a pair of hits afterwards, but by that time the Red Sox already had 5 runs on the board. Pesky scored in the 1st after a lead off triple, Pinky Higgins drove home DiMaggio with an RBI double in the 2nd as well as sending Ted Williams across the plate with an RBI double to right in the 4th. Doerr knocked a solo homer in the 5th for a 4-0 lead before Wanger made it 5-0 in the 6th with an RBI single to center. All in all Boston made easy work of the Pirates, and Pink Higgins gets the game ball going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. The Pirates scored 3 runs on 7 hits with no errors. Also without an error, the 1946 Red Sox scored 5 runs on 11 hits.

RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1927 New York Yankees

Lefty Grove

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics: 6
  • 1927 New York Yankees: 3

Yankees’ pitcher Waite Hoyt got himself into trouble early after a lead off strikeout to begin the game. The next eight of the batters in the lineup all reached base safely until a fielder’s choice and another strikeout to Mickey Cochrane ended the onslaught, but not before the Athletics had scored 5 runs. Hoyt settled down and remained in the game through the first five innings, but the damage had already been done. The Yankees scored a pair in the 3rd and another in the 7th before Philadelphia added their 6th run in the 8th to put the game out of reach. Lefty Grove proved his solid credentials holding the “Murderer’s Row” Yankees to just 3 runs on 8 hits throughout the affair and on his way to being named the game’s best player. He also did well at the plate going 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the first. The Athletics win game 1 with 6 runs on 11 hits. The Yankees fall with 3 runs on 8 hits. No errors were committed by either team throughout the game’s play.

CC-True Championship of 2011 Game 7

Toshiya Sugiuchi

  • 2011 Fukuoka Softbank Hawks-2
  • 2011 St. Louis Cardinals-1

Pitching was the name of game 7 as both teams combined for only 3 runs on 14 hits. The Hawks took the lead in the 4th with an RBI groundout to short from Kokubo. An RBI single from the Cardinals pitcher in the bottom of the 7th inning knotted the game at 1-1. Fukuoka struck back immediately in the top of the 8th grabbing the winning run. Toshiya Sugiuchi, the game’s star, pitched 7 innings allowing just 1 run on 6 hits while tossing 8 strikeouts. The Cardinals lose the game and the series after 1 run on 8 hits with no errors. The Hawks win with 2 runs on 6 hits without any errors as well.

CC: True Championship of 2011 Game 6

Skip Schumaker

  • 2011 Fukuoka Softbank Hawks-3
  • 2011 St. Louis Cardinals-8

Again the home team in the series gets the win as the Cardinals grabbed their first blowout of the series, 8-3. Stacking up 57% of their runs into 2 innings certainly helped as St. Louis plated 3 runners in the 3rd and another 4 in the 8th. The Hawks tried to keep the game in reach facing a 2 run deficit going into the bottom of the 8th inning, but their bullpen just could not hold up under the loud cheers of the Cardinals faithful. Although Jake Westbrook pitched another wonderful game going 8 inning with 2 earned runs and 9 strikeouts, it is Skip Schumaker who gets player of the game honor with his 4 for 4, 2 double, 1 RBI, and 1 run performance. The Hawks scored 3 runs on 12 hits without a single error. The Cardinals grabbed 8 runs on 14 hits with 1 error.

CC-True Championship of 2011 Game 5

Tsuyoshi Wada

  • 2011 St. Louis Cardinals-1
  • 2011 Fukuoka Softbank Hawks-7

For the last game of the series to be played in Japan, the Softbank Hawks swept the Cardinals in their homeland with a 7-1 stomping to go 3-0 in the land of the rising sun. Tsuyoshi Wada pitched a 4 hit 1 run complete game as the Hawks grabbed an easy victory. Wada started out with some accuracy problems early on, walking 4 Cards in the first 3 innings including a hit batter, but after that he held St. Louis to just 2 hits throughout the rest of the contest and earns the game ball. Offensively the Hawks piled up 5 runs in the second and 2 more courtesy of a Uchikawa homer in the 4th as they easily skated to the victory. St. Louis scored 1 run on 4 hits with 1 error while the Hawks grabbed 7 with 13 hits and no errors.

GTS-1954 Cleveland Indians at 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers

Daryl Spencer

  • 1954 Cleveland Indians-3
  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-6

Even though they were outhit for the game, all the Dodgers needed was the 1st inning to secure their victory over the Cleveland Indians. After 4 singles and a walk, Daryl Spencer hit a difficult bouncer to second that saw him safe at first, and the winning run of the game scoring on the error by Avila. Spencer also added a two run homer in the 6th to earn the game ball. Try as they might to make the comeback, Cleveland could only add a run in the 4th and another in the 5th. The Indians lose with 3 runs on 10 hits with 1 error, and the Dodgers plated 6 on 8 hits without an error.

Bob Allison

  • 1965 Minnesota Twins-4
  • 1906 Chicago Cubs-2

Outscoring the Twins 2-1, and outhitting them 8-4, the Chicago Cubs suffered a defensive breakdown in the top of the 9th when a one out triple by Bob Allison led to him scoring with 2 outs thanks to an error on Tinker. The 2-2 tie sent the game into extras where a Harmon Killebrew 2 run homer put the Twins up 4-2. The Cubs could not hit the ball out of the infield in their half of the inning and lost the game. With 2 triples and scoring the tying run, Bob Allison is given player of the game distinction. The Twins scored 4 runs on 6 hits with no errors while the Cubs scored 2 runs on 8 hits with 3 errors.
