GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Brett Boone

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-5
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-6

The longest game yet of the season sees the Mariners walk off the Reds in 13 innings. Seattle grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and was up 3-1 after the 3rd, but 4 unanswered runs by Cincinnati had the Reds up 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th. A lead off pinch hit single by Stan Javier was followed up by hits from Ichiro Suzuki, Mark McLemore, and John Olerud tying the game at 5 runs a piece. It was not until the bottom of the 13th inning that the contest was decided after a Dan Wilson double led off the inning and a 2 out RBI single from Edgar Martinez ended the affair. Player of the game Bret Boone had a day of 3’s with 3 hits, all doubles, and 3 RBI’s. The Reds lost a heartbreaker with 5 runs on 10 hits with no errors. The Mariners walk off with 6 runs on 12 hits and 1 error.

ST-1965 California Angels at 1965 Houston Astros

Jim Wynn

  • 1965 California Angels-5
  • 1965 Houston Astros-8

A spring training exhibition match between 2 teams who never met head-to-head in the regular season saw the 65 win Astros defeat the 75 win Angels in what had the makings of an early blowout. Despite an early lead from a Vic Power opening frame homer, the Astros batted around in the bottom of the 1st and plated 6 thanks in part to a Jim Wynn 3 run bomb and a Lee Maye triple. Jim Wynn added another run in the 4th after a Rusty Staub RBI single to right, and in the 7th Staub gave himself a run with a homer. Down 8-1 and with Robin Roberts looking solid on the mound for the ‘Stros, the Angels looked to be doomed to defeat, but in top of the 8th after a walk, base hit, and error on Astros second baseman Joe Morgan, Buck Rogers (in the 25th Century) crushed a 1-0 curve for a grand slam. Their inning and game ended after that without another hit. The Angels lose with 5 runs on 8 hits and 1 error while Houston captured the win with 8 runs on 13 hits and 2 errors. Going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s, 2 runs, a stolen base, and a homer, Jim Wynn makes the easy choice for player of the game.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox at 1984 Detroit Tigers

Kirk Gibson

  • 1946 Boston Red Sox-8
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-9

The first 5 runs for the Sox were scored by Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, Rudy York and Hal Wagner. For the Tigers, their 5 came from Kirk Gibson, Chet Lemon, Darrell Evans, Lou Whitaker, and Larry Herndon. The Tigers grabbed the last 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 7th and 8th to go up 9-8 and stay there. GTS-1961 New York Yankees at 1976 Philadelphia Phillies

Bob Cerv

  • 1961 New York Yankees-8
  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-7

The big bats came out in this extra innings affair between 2 offensive powerhouses. The Yanks looked on their way to a rout in the top of the 1st and 2nd innings as they jumped out quickly to a 6-0 lead. In the 1st, homers by Bob Cerv and Elston Howard scored 5 runs, and in the following frame pitcher Bud Daley was sent home by Tony Kubek after the pitch tosser led off the inning with a double. In the bottom of the 2nd however, the Phils proved it was still early, and thanks in part to a Bob Boone double Philadelphia made the score 6-4. After the 3rd, New York still led by 2, 7-5, after a triple by Boyer in the top of the inning and an error on Kubek in the bottom half. In the 8th, the Phillies tied it up with 2 runs scored by Mike Schmidt and Jay Johnstone, and both teams remained knotted at 7 at the end of regulation. Roger Maris scored Mickey Mantle for the winning run in the top of the 10th when Philadelphia could not get on base in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees win in extras, 8 runs on 16 hits with no errors. Philadelphia loses with 7 runs on 9 hits with 1 error. Bob Cerv’s 3 RBI’s and 2 for 5 showing with a home run helped him to get the game ball.

  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-5

The Buccos grabbed an early lead and never relented. With Eddie Moore anxiously standing on first base in the bottom of the 1st, Kiki Cuyler blasted a homer that put the Pirates up early 2-0. In the 3rd, Max Carey led things off with a solo shot before Pie Traynor racked a double to left to score Eddie Moore and George Grantham scored Cuyler on a ground out to second. The Giants made a failed comeback attempt starting in the 6th when Johnny Rawlings plated pitcher Fred Toney on an RBI single. New York grabbed their second and final run in the 8th on a groundout to 3rd that scored Frankie Frisch. The Giants scored 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 error, and Pittsburgh scored 5 runs on 11 hits without an error. RTUP-1929 Philadelphia Athletics at 1927 New York Yankees

Jimmie Foxx

  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-3
  • 1927 New York Yankees-2

It was a solid pitchers duel in the big apple between 2 offensive juggernauts with some 9th inning magic that made all of the difference. In the first 7 innings only the Yankees were able to get on the board with a run. Earle Combs, after a leadoff triple, made his way home on a Lou Gehrig single. The score remained 1-0 until the Athletics tied it up in the top of the 8th. A 2 out single from Mule Haas tied up the game after he drove Max Bishop home. Philadelphia finally took the lead after Jimmie Foxx hit a 3-0 fastball out of the park with Al Simmons standing on 1st base. The Yankees, in the bottom of the inning and with plenty of batters reaching, could only manage to cut into the A’s victory by 1 run ending the game down 3-2. Jimmie Foxx gets the game ball going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s on the game winning home run. The Athletics win with 3 runs on 7 hits and no errors. The Yankees lose with 2 runs on 7 hits and no errors as well.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates

Johnny Rawlings

  • 1921 New York Giants-5
  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-3

Errors hurt, and the Pirates committed 3 of them in this game that cost them 3 runs as well as the game. Eddie Moore had a wild throw to begin the game that saw Johnny Rawlings plate Frankie Frisch to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. The Pirates took a 2-1 advantage in the 4th after RBI’s from Glenn Wright and George Grantham, but in the top of the following inning 2 more errors on the Bucs saw the Giants score George Burns, Art Nehf, and Frankie Frisch for a 3 run lead. The Pirates added a solo homer in the 8th by Kiki Cuyler, but it was too little too late as the Giants win with 5 runs on 8 hits with no errors, and the Pirates lose with 3 runs on 6 hits and a costly 3 errors. Johnny Rawlings gets the game ball after going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.

GTS-1962 Los Angeles Dodgers at 1942 St. Louis Cardinals

Johnny Hopp

  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-7
  • 1942 St. Louis Cardinals-8

A messy scorecard, thanks to a record setting combined number of hits for both teams, saw the 1942 Cardinals eek out the victory despite a late surge by the Dodgers. After Johnny Hopp scored on an RBI double from Marty Marion in the second put the Cardinals into an early 1-0 lead, the Dodgers scored 2 on a Tommy Davis double in the 3rd. St. Louis scored 1 run in their halves of the 4th and 5th inning before L.A. tied up the game at 3 in the top of the 6th. In the bottom half of the inning however, the Cardinals tallied 4 runs take the lead 7-3. Another St. Louis run from a solo homer in the bottom of the 7th gave them a 5 run lead. The Cards let their foot off of the gas as the Dodgers made it 8-4 in the 8th, and then a 3 run bomb from Ron Fairly brought Los Angeles within 1 run of tying up the game. Cardinals closer Howie Pollet closed out the contest with a fly to left and a groundout to first. The Dodgers lose with 7 runs on 13 hits and no errors. St. Louis wins with 8 runs on 16 hits and 1 error. Johnny Hopp snags the ball for the game’s best performance as he goes 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored as well as catching the final out of the game.
