RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics Game 2

George Earnshaw

  • 1921 New York Giants-2
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-6

Game 2 of the Roaring Twenties was nearly a repeat of the previous affair only in the opposite direction. Philadelphia came out hot piling up 5 runs in the first 3 innings and knocking Giant starter Fred Toney out of the game after only 3 innings. Three singles and a walk in the first snagged 2 for the A’s in the opening frame, and was followed up by a 2 run bomb by Michkey Cochrane in the second. Max Bishop added another run with a double to left in the third giving Philly a 5-0 lead in the first 3 innings. The Giants came back in the 4th with a pair, but couldn’t muster much else. The Athletics added another run in the bottom of the 7th when Giant outfielders George Burns and Ross Youngs collided in left center field knocking them both out of the game and giving Jimmie Foxx an in the park home run. A’s pitcher Big George Earnshaw earns player of the game distinction hurling a complete game, 9 hit, 2 run day with 5 strikeouts. The Giants fall in game 2 with 2 runs on 9 hits with 1 error. The A’s tie the series up with 6 runs on 13 hits with 3 errors.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics Game 1

Johnny Rawlings

  • 1921 New York Giants-7
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-2

Lefty Grove may have had a dominant pitching performance in the previous series against the 1927 Yankees, but he looked weak in game one of the Roaring Twenties Ultimate Playoff championship. The Giants snagged a run in each of the first two innings after a Johnny Rawlings triple plated lead off hitter Frankie Frisch in the first and a double by George Burns in the 2nd scored Dave Bancroft in the second. In the 3rd though, the A’s tied things up with a two run blast from Bing Miller. In the 6th a solo shot by the Giants Frank Synder put them up by one and was followed up by an RBI single to center 2 batters by Ross Youngs. The A’s added on 3 more in the 8th to put the game out of reach. Unlike Lefty who gave up 4 earned runs in 5 and a third innings, Johnny Rawlings kept up his excellent performance from the previous series and snags the game ball going 3 for 5 with a triple, home run, 4 RBI’s, 1 run, and a stolen base. Giants take game one with 7 runs on 14 hits with 1 error while the A’s fall with 2 runs on 7 hits and no errors.

Dutch Reuther

  • 1919 Chicago White Sox-1
  • 1919 Cincinnati Reds-2

1991PS-1991 Montreal Expos at 1991 Pittsburgh Pirates

Dave Martinez

  • 1991 Montreal Expos-2
  • 1991 Pittsburgh Pirates-1

In the second game of the 1991 Pirates season, Pittsburgh was poised to win, but a timely triple in the final frame helped Montreal repay the favor of their game 1 loss. Both teams could not do much until the bottom of the 6th when a Bobby Bonilla double was followed by a Jeff King RBI 2 bagger 2 batters later to give the Buccos the slimmest lead possible. The score remained a 1-0 close affair until the top the 9th when Dave Martinez led off the inning with a fortunately timed triple that was followed by an Ivan Calderon single to score him. Three batters later Nelson Santovenia single to drive him home and give the Canadians a 2-1 lead that they held onto in the bottom of the frame. Dave Martinez’s triple helped him secure player of the game honors in a 2 for 4, 1 run, 1 sacrifice day. The Expos win with 2 runs on 7 hits without any errors. The Pirates lose with 1 run on 7 hits and no errors.

1919 World Series Replay Game 1

Eddie Cicotte

  • Chicago White Sox-1
  • Cincinnati Reds-0

Both pitchers tossed solid 9 hit complete games, but it was the Chicago White Sox who came out victorious when a 1 out Bucky Weaver double gave Joe Jackson the opportunity to drive in the game’s only run the following plate appearance with a base hit to left. Despite suspicions arising thanks to 4 errors on the White Sox, Eddie Cicotte pitched superbly despite committing 2 of the errors himself. He earns the game ball throwing 9 innings with 9 hits, no runs scored, and 3 strikeouts. Had Cincinnati managed more than singles they may have gotten the opportunity to score a run and send the game into extra innings, but despite the hits and Chicago’s willingness to make mistakes they could not get a runner to the plate. Chicago wins game 1 with 1 run on 9 hits and 4 errors. The Redlegs scored no runs on 9 hits with 1 error.

RTUP-1921 New York Giants at 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates

Irish Meusel

  • 1921 New York Giants-12
  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-6

Through the first five innings it appeared as if the Pirates would drag the series to a seventh game. New York started in the top of the 1st with a three run homer by High Pockets Kelly, but Pittsburgh came back in the bottom half with three doubles by Eddie Moore, Kiki Cuyler, and Pie Traynor before a home run by George Grantham put the Pirates up 4-3. The Buccos added another run in the 2nd and one more in the 4th to go up 6-3. Then, smelling a series victory within their grasp, the flood gates opened for the Giants in the back frames. With 2 runs in the 6th, 3 in the 7th, and two more in each of their half of the 8th and 9th, New York decimated the Pirates pitching and came away with the game and the series. Left fielder Irish Meusel set a Statis Pro Baseball record with 5 hits on his way to player of the game honors. He also came away with 3 RBI’s, a double, and two runs scored. New York takes the easy win with 12 runs on 19 hits with no errors while Pittsburgh is sent packing with 6 runs on 14 hits and 1 error.

  • 1921 New York Giants-5

Game 5 of the NL Roaring Twenties Ultimate Playoffs was not nearly as close as the score as Art Nehf, who gets the game ball, made a solid performance and earned himself a complete game win. In the 2nd inning the Giants hits 4 consecutive singles to plate Frank Snyder and Dave Bancroft, and in the 3rd New York scored Rawlings, Kelly, and Snyder again for a dominant 5-0 lead. Nehf and the defense kept the Pirates at bay until the top of the 8th when the Buccos scored Barnhart, Smith and Carey to bring the game within 2 runs, but they could not manage anymore throughout the last 2 innings. The Pirates go down 3 games to 2 with 3 runs on 7 hits with 1 error. The Giants now stand within 1 game of victory with 5 runs on  10 hits with 1 error as well.

RTUP-1927 New York Yankees at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics

Lefty Grove

  • 1927 New York Yankees-1
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-3

The 1927 Murderer’s Row Yankees have often been hailed as the Greatest Team of All Time. The 1929 Athletics have something to say about that as they take game 5 and the series. It was a pitcher’s duel as Lefty Grove and Waite Hoyt battled it out for supremacy, but in the end the A’s Grove took the win and the game surrendering 1 run on 6 hits and earning player of the game distinction. Both hurlers tossed a pair of scoreless six and a half innings before Philadelphia grabbed 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th thanks to 3 singles, a walk, and a double from Foxx, Hale, Bishop, Grove, and Cochrane. New York snagged 3 back to back to back singles in the 9th for their single run, but Philly took the victory on their pitching with 3 runs on 6 hits with 1 errors while the Yankees lose the game and the series on 1 run with 6 hits and 2 errors.

RTUP-1925 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1921 New York Giants

Clyde Barnhart

  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-5
  • 1921 New York Giants-4

After the Giants saw a pair of doubles score a single run in the bottom of the 1st and the Pirates snagged a run on an error in the top of the second, things went badly for New York in the top of the 3rd. Giants pitcher Phil Douglas looked erratic and gave up a pair of singles before leaving the game with a blister on his throwing hand. In stepped Rosy Ryan who proceeded to give up a pair of two baggers and a pair of singles before leaving the game. The Buccos led by a score of 5-1 when their half of the inning ended, but solid relief pitching from New York’s Red Causey and fortuitous happenstance nearly allowed the Giants to crawl back into this one. In the bottom of the 3rd New York made the score 5-2 on a fielder’s choice groundout to short. Pie Traynor for the Pirates was thrown out of the game with an apparent use of an illegal bat in the 5th and Clyde Barnhart left the game in the 7th when he crashed into the wall in left allowing George Burns to score on a Johnny Rawlings double. Rawlings plated when the next batter, Irish Meusel, hit a single into center. Despite a solid comeback however, New York could not manage the tying run and lose with 4 runs on 10 hits with 2 errors. Pittsburgh takes game 4 with 5 runs on 9 hits without an error. Even though he was knocked out of the game in the bottom of the 7th, Clyde Barnhart takes the game ball with 2 hits on 3 at bats which included the Pirates first and last RBI’s.

RTUP-1927 New York Yankees at 1929 Philadelphia Athletics

Mule Haas

  • 1927 New York Yankees-7
  • 1929 Philadelphia Athletics-9

The Murderer’s Row New York Yankee offense finally came alive in a big way. Unfortunately, the Athletic offense gave just a little bit more and snatched the win. The Yankee’s drew first blood in the 3rd with a solo homer by Pat Collins to lead off the inning and 4 walks had Mark Koenig trot home for a 2-0 New York advantage. They made it 3-0 in the top of the 4th thanks to a Lou Gehrig single to left that scored Earle Combs. In the bottom of the inning however is when the A’s came alive. Philly batted around and snagged 5 runs courtesy of an error on Koenig, 2 walks, and hits by Mule Haas, Bing Miller, Sammy Hale, and a pinch hit 2 RBI single by Jimmy Dykes. The Yanks added another run in the top of the 5th, but Philadelphia left off where they ended their previous time at the plate scoring an additional 4 runs for a 9-4 commanding lead. The Babe crushed his first homer of the series with a 3-run shot in the 8th, but the Yankees could mount no more. New York scored 7 runs on 11 hits with 2 errors on Koenig and 1 on Tony Lazzeri. Philadelphia scored 9 runs on 11 hits without an error. A’s centerfielder Mule Haas takes the player of the game honor reaching base 4 times including the winning 2 RBI double to right in the 5th inning.
