GTS-1975 Cincinnati Reds at 1962 San Francisco Giants

don gullett

  • 1975 Cincinnati Reds-2
  • 1962 San Francisco Giants-1

The “Big Red Machine” flew out to San Francisco for their first game of the Great Teams Season and left victorious despite only hitting 3 singles and a home run the entire game thanks to all but one of those hits coming in the 4th inning. Ken Griffey took a Sanford 2-2 curveball deep to score himself and Pete Rose and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead they held throughout the rest of the game. The Giants may have outhit the Reds, but not outscore them thanks to player of the game Don Gullett who hurled 8 innings giving up just 1 run on 7 hits. The 1975 Reds get their first win of the season with 2 runs on 4 hits without an error. Disappointed, the 1962 San Francisco Giants only managed to score a lone run in the first while reaching base on 9 hits and no errors.

PS-1960 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates

Bob Friend

  • 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates: 3
  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates: 1

The 1909 Pirates played terribly as another World Series Champion, the 1960 team, went on to attain the W after a 3 run 4th accounted for all of their runs in the game.  An error on Dots Miller in the inning began a run that saw Dick Groat, Smokey Burgess, and Don Hoak all score.  The 1909 Pirates saw a little life when they scored a run by Tommy Leach after a Bill Abstein single in the 7th, but otherwise they accounted for only 2 other hits outside of the inning in the game.  The 1960 Pirates take home the win with 3 runs on 7 hits without committing an error.  The 1909 Bucs scored 1 run on 4 hits with an error.  The 1960 Pirates pitcher Bob Friend threw nine innings with 3 hits, 1 run, and 3 strikeouts.  He is named player of the game.

GTS-1975 Oakland Athletics at 1986 New York Mets

Doc Gooden

  • 1975 Oakland Athletics-0
  • 1986 New York Mets-7

The Swingin’s A’s of 1975 did more swaying than swinging as they were shutout 7-0 by the ’86 Mets. Darryl Strawberry opened up the game with a 1st inning deep shot and the scored remained 1 to 0 until the bottom of the 6th when the New York batted around scoring five.  They added an extra run in the 7th after a Gary Carter double turned into a run when Mookie Wilson blasted a triple to centerfield.  With all of the offense though it was Doc Gooden on the mound who gets the game ball throwing 8 innings giving up only 3 hits and striking out 7.  The Athletics scored 0 on 3 hits with no errors.  The 1986 Mets scored 7 on 10 hits without an error.

GTS-1965 Minnesota Twins at 1969 Baltimore Orioles

Boog Powell

  • 1965 Minnesota Twins-6
  • 1969 Baltimore Orioles-9

Offense aplenty in this battle of 1960’s powerhouse AL teams. The 1965 Twins scored 3 runs in the 5th, 2 runs in the 7th thanks to back to back long balls from Oliva and Versalles, and a single run in the 9th, but it was not enough to stop the Baltimore Orioles who scored a run in every inning except the 5th and 7th on their way to a 9 to 6 victory at home.  The 2 teams combined for a total of 7 home runs with the Orioles accounting for 5 of that total.  Boog Powell was the game’s star knocking 2 of the 5 out in consecutive at bats in the 6th and 8th innings, and with a single in the 1st for a 3 for 4 showing.  The Twins scored 6 runs on 11 hits without an error while Baltimore totaled 9 with 16 hits and an error for the win.

GTS-1909 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1976 Philadelphia Phillies

Tommy Leach

  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-12
  • 1976 Philadelphia Phillies-2

In the battle of Pennsylvania, the 1909 Pirates slapped around their cross state rival 12 to 2. The deadball era Bucs batted around in both the 1st and 7th innings where they accounted for 4 runs in each frame and they scored 2 runs in both the 5th and the 8th.  Every Pirate hitter except the pitcher tallied a hit, but it is Tommy Leach who takes home the game ball going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, a triple, and team high 3 runs scored.  The Pirates start their season in style, winning with 12 runs on 17 hits despite committing 3 errors.  The Phillies looked out of their element against the Pirates with 4 hits that netted them 2 runs without an error.

GTS-1961 New York Yankees at 1984 Detroit Tigers

Lance Parrish

  • 1961 New York Yankees-4
  • 1984 Detroit Tigers-5

The Bronx Bombers took a quick 3 to nothing lead in the top of the 2nd from a Bill Skowron homer, but the Tigers battled back with single runs in the 3rd and 4th before taking the lead on a 2 run homer by Lance Parrish in the bottom of the 6th.  The Yankees, not willing to be out done, tied it in the top of the following inning before dropping the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning.  The Tigers begin their season victorious with 5 runs on 8 hits and an error.  The 1961 Yankees, playoff favorites to begin the season, drop their first game with 4 runs on 10 hits and 1 error.  Lance Parrish takes player of the game honor going 3 for 4 with a run scored, a home run and driving in 4 of the Tigers 5 runs.

ST-1986 New York Mets at 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates

Zane Smith

  • 1986 New York Mets-1
  • 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates-6

A demoralizing 3rd inning proved to be all the Pirates needed to defeat the great ’86 Mets.  Gary Redus led off the inning with a double and the rest of the team came alive adding five runs to their already one run lead on another double, 2 walks, and 3 singles before Redus groundout to second to end the onslaught.  New York got their only run in the top of the 8th off of a Lenny Dykstra single to end the game down by five instead of six.  The Mets lose on the road with 1 run on 6 hits and no errors.  The Pirates take the easy win with 6 runs on 12 hits and zero errors.  Pirates pitcher Zane Smith takes the game ball after a dependable 8 innings pitched, surrendering 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 9 and only walking 2.
