1955 World Series Replay Game 1

Yogi Berra

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-1
  • 1955 New York Yankees-6

Sept 28th, 1955-The Brooklyn Dodgers came by subway to Yankee Stadium to take on the mighty Yanks in front of a crowd of 63,869. On the mound for the Yankees was all-star Whitey Ford facing 20 game winner Don Newcombe.  Ford was to be the better pitcher this day, holding the Dodgers to just 1 run on 8 hits and never found himself in trouble.  His opposite, Newcombe, was perfect for the first 3 innings before giving up a 3-run homer in the 4th and another run in the 7th and was then replaced by Bessent.  On offense Yogi Berra proved to be the game’s hero going 2 for 4 with 4 Rbi’s and the game winning home run in the 4th.  The Dodgers scored 1 run on 8 hits with no errors while the Yanks scored 6 on 11 hits with 1 error.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 19 Oct 2016. In the original game 1, the New York Yankees won by the score of 6-5.

ST-1968 St. Louis Cardinals at 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers

orlando cepeda

  • 1968 St. Louis Cardinals-3
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-2

This one was a good game between two teams separated by 13 years as the Dodgers took a one run lead in the bottom of the 2nd from a Carl Furillo bomber to center before St. Louis tied it in the top of the next frame.  In the top of the next inning, the Cardinals added two more runs from a Maxvill double and the score remained 3 to 1 until the bottom of the 7th inning.  A double from Pee Wee Reese to begin the inning saw him score two batters later when Zimmer singled to drive him home and bring the Dodgers within a run.  In the last 2 innings the Dodgers could only manage a single, no runs, and lost the game with 6 hits that scored 2 runs and a single error.  The 1968 Cardinals won the game with 3 runs on 12 hits and no errors.  Player of the game ball goes to the Cardinals Orlando Cepeda who went 4 for 4 with an RBI double in the 3rd.

Notes: My brother’s first game. He played as the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers while I handpicked the 1968 Cardinals looking for a comparable team to offer up a competitive game.

GTS-1954 Cleveland Indians at 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates

pirates generic

  • 1954 Cleveland Indians-2
  • 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates-3

Just by looking at the raw numbers it appears impossible that the 1909 Pirates pulled out the victory in this one. Scoring a run in the 2nd inning without a hit thanks to a walk and an error on Cleveland’s shortstop Strickland, the Pirates tied the game after the Indians put a run on the board in the top of the inning.  In the 5th they took the lead after another walk, a base hit, and a double from Jap Barbeau scored Bill Abstein and Tommy Leach to give the Buccos a 3-1 lead and the game.  The Indians scored another in the 8th, but could not come away with anything more.  Thanks to his 2 RBI game winning double in the 5th, Jap Barbeau takes player of the game distinction.  The 1954 Indians scored 2 runs on 8 hits with 1 error.  The 1909 Pirates scored 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 errors and somehow pull out the victory.

GTS-1946 Boston Red Sox at 2001 Seattle Mariners

Joel Pineiro

  • 1946 Boston Reds Sox-0
  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-2

Both offenses were flat as each pitcher threw solid complete games with the 2001 Mariners coming out on top thanks to a 2 run rally in the 6th that was all they needed to get the win.  Mark McLemore walked and stole a base to begin the inning before Edgar Martinez hit a double to left field to score the winning run and then was driven home by Mike Cameron later in the inning.  Joel Pineiro, the Mariners starting pitcher, gets the game ball with 13 strikeouts thrown in his complete game shutout.  The 1946 Red Sox scored no runs on 3 hits with 1 error.  The 2001 Seattle Mariners scored 2 runs on 6 hits with no errors.

PS-1902 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates

Don Slaught

  • 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates-5
  • 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates-4

The 1992 Pirates came out quickly with a 4 runs in the first 4 innings scoring single runs in the 2nd and 3rd and 2 runs in the 4th.  The 1902 Bucs only scored 1 run in the 2nd and went down 4-1 at the halfway point in the contest, but continued to battle throughout.  Adding 2 runs in the 6th and another in the 8th inning to tie the game up going into the 9th.  Tommy Leach knocked a 2 out single that was followed by an infield hit by Claude Ritchey before a timely and disappointing error on Jay Bell allowed Leach to score and the 1902 team to go up by one going into the bottom of the frame.  Three easy outs in the bottom of the 9th sealed the victory for the boys from ’02.  The 1902 Pirates win with 5 runs on 12 hits without an error.  The 1992 Buccos lose with 4 runs on 8 hits and the error on Bell costing them the game.  Despite losing, 1992 Pirates catcher Don Slaught is named player of the game going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and an RBI.

PS-1974 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates

George Grantham

  • 1974 Pittsburgh Pirates-2
  • 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates-15

Mismatched and outplayed, the 1974 Pirates were decimated at the plate and on the mound as the 1927 Pirates piled up 15 runs while only giving up 2 thanks to defensive mistakes. The team from ’27 scored 2 runs in the 1st, 4th, and 9th, but it was back to back hitting prowess in the 5th and 6th frames where they tallied 5 runs and 4 runs respectively.  In the game the 1927 Bucs accounted from 2 homers, 2 triples, 3 doubles and 13 singles while ace starter Ray Kremer struck out 7 in 8 innings pitched without being charged an earned run.  Despite that great performance on the mound, the offense’s complete destruction of the NL East division winners from 1974 was the real story of the contest and second baseman George Grantham gets the game ball with a 4 for 4 showing that included 2 singles, a double, and a 3 RBI triple.  The 1974 Pirates get destroyed with 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 errors while the team from 1927 wins with 15 runs on 20 hits with 2 errors accounting from the opposition’s runs.

GTS-2001 Seattle Mariners at 1906 Chicago Cubs

freddy garcia

  • 2001 Seattle Mariners-3
  • 1906 Chicago Cubs-0

When two high quality pitching staffs meet, high quality pitching ensues. Both Freddy Garcia for the Mariners and Jack Pfeister for the Cubs pitched wonderful complete games accounting for 15 strikeouts between them, but it was Garcia who earns the win thanks to timely hitting and quality base running from his offense.  Despite not getting a single hit in 7 of their 9 innings, the Mariners were able to get 3 consecutive singles in the 2nd to account for the winning run of the game as well as a double and a single in the 9th that scored John Olerud.  Their other run came in the 6th when a walk and steal by Mark McLemore lead to a pair of ground outs that scored him without the team registering a hit.  On the flip side the Cubs spread their few hits out and were never able to plate a runner.  Obviously, Freddy Garcia gets the game ball with his complete game shutout and 7 strikeouts.  The 2001 Mariners scored 3 runs on 5 hits with 2 errors.  The 1906 Cubs put up zero on 5 hits with only 1 error.

GTS-1962 Los Angeles Dodgers at 1986 New York Mets

darryl strawberry

  • 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers-5
  • 1986 New York Mets-6

New York versus Los Angeles lived up to the hype as both teams played an exciting game into the 9th inning.  The Dodgers drew first blood in the 2nd scoring 2 runs on RBI singles from Roseboro and Wills, but the Mets tied it up in the 3rd thanks to Wally Backman and Darryl Strawberry singles.  The Dodgers went up by 2 again after back to back homers to open the 6th inning came from Frank Howard and Ron Fairly.  Not to be deterred, the Mets brought back to back long balls in the 7th themselves with the first, a 2 run shot from Strawberry, followed by a Dykstra solo blast.  New York held a 1 run lead going into the top of the 9th when Jim Gilliam knocked an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at five.  New York magic happened in the bottom of the inning however as Backman scored on a difficult hop to short that walked off the game for New York in fine fashion.  The Dodgers scored 5 runs on 12 hits and the Mets scored 6 on 15 hits without either team registering an error.  Darryl Strawberry takes player of the game distinction going 4 for 4 with a homer and 4 RBI’s.

PS-1925 Pittsburgh Pirates at 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates

Max Carey

  • 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates-7
  • 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates-4

The pitching for both teams struggled in this matchup of Pittsburgh playoff teams, but in the end the pitching mistakes of the 2013 Buccos proved to be too much for them to overcome. The 2013 Pirates used up 6 pitchers battling a hungry but patient 1925 team that walked 8 times throughout the course of the game with 3 of them all scoring, marking the score differential between the two teams.  The 1925 Pittsburgh team scored 3 runs in the 2nd thanks to a Glenn Wright homerun and an Eddie Moore single plated Max Carey following a triple.  They scored two more in the 4th thanks to 2 base hits and 3 consecutive walks and another 2 in the 6th when the first 2 batters were walked and were followed up with a base hit and some quality base running.  The 2013 Bucs were able to score in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but ultimately were not able to overcome their pitching woes.  The 1925 Pirates scored 7 runs on 10 hits without and error while the 2013 Pirates scored 4 on 8 hits with 1 error on reliever Mark Melancon.  Max Carey gets the title of player of the game going 3 for 5 with a triple, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base.

randy tomlin

  • 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates-3
  • 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates-0

The Pittsburgh Lumber Company goes on strike as the powerful offense of the 1979 Pirates is shutout to the franchise’s 1990 team. The score was all knotted at zero a piece going into the top of the 6th inning when the 1990 Pirates ran up 4 doubles from Jay Bell, Andy Van Slyke, Barry Bonds, and Sid Bream to score 3 runs and which ultimately accounted for the only points of the game.  1990 Pirates pitcher Randy Tomlin earns the game ball tossing a complete game shutout that included 8 strikeouts.  The Pittsburgh team from 1990 scored 3 runs on 9 hits with 3 errors and get the win over the 1979 World Series champions who could not find a run throughout the course of the game while getting 3 hits total and no errors.
