1993 World Series Replay Game 4

Tommy Greene

  • 1993 Toronto Blue Jays-3
  • 1993 Philadelphia Phillies-8

Oct 20th, 1993-The largest crowd of the series came out for game 4 at Veteran’s Stadium where Toronto hoped to spike some offense as right fielder Joe Carter returned to the series from a game 1 injury.  After a long rainy day in Philadelphia and slippery turf conditions, the dome dwelling Blue Jays could only manage 2 hits in the first 6 innings of the game while the Phillies piled up 8 runs in the first 3, knocked starting pitcher Todd Stottlemyre out after a single inning pitched, and took a commanding lead of the series.  The Canadians managed 2 runs in the 7th and another in the 8th, but they could not stop a dominate Tommy Greene who pitched a concrete 8 innings giving up 2 earned runs with 9 strikeouts.  A weak offense and a sputtering pitching staff has gotten the Toronto Blue Jays 1 loss away from the end of their season.  Game 4 saw them put up 3 runs on 7 hits and wet conditions causing 4 costly errors.  Philadelphia knocked in 8 runs on 13 hits and only succumbed to the conditions with 1 error.

  • 1993 Toronto Blue Jays-4
  • 1993 Philadelphia Phillies-10

Oct 19th, 1993-Game 3 saw the series move back to the states and Veteran’s Stadium in Philadelphia. Toronto took a 2 run lead into the bottom of the 5th inning after a 3 run 3rd and 1 run in the top half of the frame against Philadelphia’s single runs in the 3rd and 4th.  The Blue Jays pitching let them down again with starter Dave Stewart allowing 4 of the 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th, giving a lead to Philly they never relinquished.  A 3 run homer by Milt Thompson in the 6th added a bit of insurance to an already insurmountable lead giving Phillies pitcher Danny Jackson his first win of the series and relievers DeLeon and Anderson pitched strong performances without a single Blue Jays hit in the final 4 innings.  Toronto loses game 3 with only 4 runs on 8 hits and 1 error while Philadelphia drove in 10 on 14 hits with no errors and lead the series 2 games to 1.  Going 2 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and a home run, Milt Thompson is the game’s best player.

  • 1993 Philadelphia Phillies-6
  • 1993 Toronto Blue Jays-5

Oct 17th, 1993-The second game of the series saw Philadelphia picking up right where they left off in game one scoring 3 runs in the first, adding two more in the third, and another in the fourth off of a Lenny Dykstra home run. Leading the game 6-1 in the fifth, Philadelphia hoped their bullpen could keep the Blue Jays in line, but after scoring one in the third inning, Toronto battled back with single runs in the sixth and seventh to bring the game closer at 6-3.  An error on Jim Eisenreich for the Phillies in the bottom of the 9th allowed a run to score and a base hit by Devon White brought the Blue Jays back within a single run of tying the game.  Philadelphia closer Mitch Williams sealed the deal with two flyouts to end the game and stop Toronto’s comeback.  Although there was not a far and away star, Phillies pitcher Terry Mulholland earns the game ball with 6 innings pitched, 8 hits, 1 earned run, 6 strikeouts and the win.  The Phillies tied the series at 1 game a piece by a score of 6-5 with 10 hits and 1 costly error.  The Blue Jays mounted 5 runs, 12 hits, and no errors, but still could not come up with the victory.

  • 1993 Philadelphia Phillies-14
  • 1993 Toronto Blue Jays-15

Oct 16th, 1993-With 52,011 in attendance, the fans at SkyDome witnessed a crazy game one with both teams filling up the scoreboard with runs despite both teams’ ace pitchers Schilling and Guzman on the mound.  Philly and Toronto piled up runs and used pitchers up with a fury as Philadelphia scored multiple runs in the 3rd, 4th,5th, and 7th innings and Toronto scoring multiple runs in the 1st, 4th, 6th and 7th.  The Phillies led the game 14-8 in the bottom of the 7th inning when the Blue Jays batted around and scored 7 runs behind numerous walks, 2 hits, and a home runs by Roberto Alomar.  In the final two innings, both pitching staffs finally got control over the game and shut their opponents down.  Unfortunately for Philadelphia, they were behind when that happened and ended up dropping Game 1, 15-14.  The game sets three new World Series records, including the longest game (4:14), most total runs scored (29), and most runs by a losing team (14).  In being responsible for the Blue Jays comeback, Philadelphia pitcher Mitch Williams received two death threats phoned into SkyDome after the game.  The Phillies scored 14 runs on 12 hits with 2 errors while the Blue Jays brought 15 across on 15 hits with 3 errors.  Phillies centerfielder Lenny Dykstra was the standout among a long list of standouts going 2 for 5 with 2 homers, a whopping 8 RBI’s and scoring 3 himself.

1955 World Series Replay Game 7

Johnny Podres

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-13
  • 1955 New York Yankees-2

Oct 4th, 1955-After coming back 3 games to 1 to tie things up and send it to a 7th game, the Yankees were feeling like luck was on their side, but it just was not to be as the big bats from Brooklyn came back with a vengeance after only scoring 1 run in the last 2 games.  The Dodgers piled up 15 hits including 3 triples and 3 home runs to put all the worries to rest and finally get vengeance on their nemesis Yankees.  Again Podres gave up only 1 earned run on a 5th inning homer to Andy Carey and striking out 7 on his way to his 2nd win of the series.  A big 6 run 1st set the stage for an unexciting finale to a back and forth series that promised to be interesting, but didn’t deliver as the Dodgers made easy work of the Bronx Bombers.  Brooklyn scored 13 runs on 15 hits with 1 error while the defeated Yanks only scored 2 runs on 7 hits with 0 errors.

1955 World Series Replay Game 6

Hank Bauer

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-0
  • 1955 New York Yankees-1

Oct 3rd, 1955-Heart means a lot and in baseball it means so much more. Down 3 games to 1 the Yankees never gave up.  They never faltered.  They never thought it was over.  Ford may have been the reason behind the Yanks wins in game 1 and game 5, but he was nowhere to be found and instead Tommy Byrne showed up and delivered a shut-out in game 6 to keep the New York darlin’s alive.  All that was needed was a 2 out double from Hank Bauer to bring the series to a 3-3 tie and a decisive 7th game.  His crucial 4th inning RBI double was all the Yanks required to secure a victory in game 6 and send this World Series to a do or die 7th game.  Complete games by both pitchers produced a Yankees victory with 1 run on 8 hits and no errors.  They defeated the Dodgers, who had 0 runs on 6 hits with no errors.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 26 Oct 2016. In the original game 6, the New York Yankees won by the score of 5-1. Also on this date in 1955, The Mickey Mouse Club premieres on ABC.

Whitey Ford

  • 1955 New York Yankees-4
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-1

Oct 2nd, 1955-The Yankees finally discover Brooklyn’s kryptonite. Whitey Ford, who pitched the Yankees to a 6-1 victory in game 1, returned to shut down the best offense in the majors again.  Unfortunately, for the Yankees they cannot pitch him every game because he put up another 1 run shut down of the boys in blue and white.  Ford helped himself with an RBI groundout to short in the 2nd inning.  Hank Bauer followed with a 2 RBI base hit that proved to be all the Bronx bombers needed to secure the victory.  In front of 36,796, New York scored 3 in the 2nd and added a solo shot from Berra in the 9th to bring the series closer with a 4-1 victory.  The Dodgers got their lone run thanks to a solo home run from Furillo in the fourth, but that proved to be all they could muster against the dominate Ford.  Yankees win with 4 runs on 6 hits with no errors.  The Dodgers lose with 1 run on 4 hits and no errors.

1955 World Series Replay Game 4

Roy Campanella

  • 1955 New York Yankees-2
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-10

Oct 1st, 1955-For a series that has not seen a home run since game 1 four days earlier, game 4 saw the ball go deep four times. “The Mick” had a 2 run shot for the Yankees only runs of the game while the Dodgers got back to back bombs from Snider and Hodges in the 7th and a solo shot from Campanella to lead off the 8th while coasting to a 10-2 victory.  For the first time this series the Yankees had to go deep into their bullpen while watching the Dodgers’ starter Clem Labine go the full 9 innings for the win, but it was Brooklyn’s offense that were the heroes behind 5 for 3 showings and homers from Campenella and Hodges.  34,242 came out to watch their beloved Dodgers get within 1 game of the championship.  The Yankees scored 2 runs on 9 hits with 2 errors while Brooklyn put up 10 on 12 hits with 1 error.

1955 World Series Replay Game 3

Johnny Podres

  • 1955 New York Yankees-2
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-4

Sept 30th, 1955-For the last ever World Series game to be played in September the smallest crowd of the series showed up to unenthusiastically celebrate the feat. 34,209 Brooklyn faithful showed up to watch their boys take a 2-1 series lead after a hard fought pitcher’s duel with both teams hurling over 10 strikeouts a piece and playing complete games.  Again the Dodgers were outhit, but they strung together a big 6th inning scoring 3 runs which would have been enough, but they added an insurance run in the 8th to win by 2.  Brooklyn’s pitcher Johnny Podres was the games star tossing 12 strikeouts and only surrendering 1 earned run.  The Yanks scored 2 runs on 8 hits with 1 error.  The Dodgers scored 4 on 6 hits with no errors.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 19 Oct 2016. In the original game 3, the Brooklyn Dodgers won by the score of 8-3. Also on this date in 1955, Actor James Dean is killed when his car collides with another car in California.

1955 World Series Replay Game 2

Duke Snider

  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-8
  • 1955 New York Yankees-3

Sept 29th, 1955-Hoping to watch the Bronx bombers take a 2-0 lead, the series largest crowd came out to see game 2 at Yankee Stadium with 64,707 in attendance, but the Yankee faithful were to be disappointed as the Dodger offense came alive for a 5 run victory. Despite outhitting the Dodgers 15 to 10 and getting a hit every inning, they were unable to string them together to get enough runs on the board.  The Dodgers were able to string ‘em together for 3 runs in the 4th and 7th innings and sandwiched their 3 run 4th with 1 in the 3rd and 5th on their way to an 8-3 victory.  The Dodgers had to go through 4 pitchers to get their victory, but get it they did behind a 3 for 3 showing by Duke Snider which included 2 doubles and a run.  The Dodgers scored 8 runs on 10 hits with 1 error.  The Yankees scored 3 runs on 15 hits with 1 error.

Notes: Played at Soothing Meadows on 19 Oct 2016. In the original game 2, the New York Yankees won by the score of 4-2.
